Hello everyone.

Looking to purchase my first router and I really don't know a whole lot about them.

Wanting to share a connection between my desktop, laptop, and PS2.

I hear Netgear is a good name brand and I am looking to get a router that I can use that won't affect my surfing and downloading speed and especially my gaming.

I saw an ad in this week's Best Buy that had the Netgear RP614 router for about $60.00 and it has a $10.00 mail-in-rebate.

My question is this a good router for gaming and does it affect you ping or even your everyday surfing and downloading?

Thanks.

ChuckDees:Netgear RP614 is a very good router and will do you a good job.But maybe you should look at the MR314 .I think you will find it will fit your needs better. I say this because The MR314 wireless cable/DSL router with 4-port switch can be set up with your desktop and your PS2 on cat5e lines on the router and your laptop on wireless. With this set up you can move around your house with the laptop and not drag cable with you. or you can just plug it in the 4-port switch with your other computers.

Thanks.

I hear a lot of talk on the board about the Nexland. The thing is I will only be playing games on either the PC or PS2 at any given time.

The laptop is for websurfing only.

So a Netgear should suffice or should I go with a Nexland?

go for the gold !! nexland is by far the best for gaming

But the wireless would be a good feature to have and Nexland's wireless model is way out of my price range.

So if I were to go wireless I would go with the Netgear MR314. But if not then I will get the Nexland.

My question is if I were to go with the Netgear and I was playing CS online and neither the PS2 or the laptop was doing anything would my ping be affected?

Would it be just as good of a connection as if I had no router at all?

ChuckDees: The only reason I said get the MR314 was because you have a laptop.IT is nice to be able to move around the house and get on line from bed or as you watch tv.I would take the MR314 over the RP614 but for games and over all speed I would get the ISB SOHO by nexland .If it were me . I would get the ISB SOHO and add the linksys wet11 to my network for the laptop.

The way it would work is after you set up the ISB SOHO just plug the wet11 into a port on the router and you would have wireless for the laptop.
Your ping has more to do with your ISP than the router but a good router will help you get as low as you can get from your ISP.

Back with another question.

What kind on ping difference would I see between the Netgear MR314 and the Nexland? Like 5ms or 30ms?

If the difference is really small I will probably go with the Netgear because I priced Nexland's wireless and it is just a tad bit more than I wanted to spend.

I really want to get wireless for the laptop since it will be a lot easier to get on the internet with it without all the cables everywhere.

Thanks
