hi, if you haven't yet, read my other posts to see that i am getting a service (zoom-dsl.com) with 256K down and 128K up, meaning i cant download faster than 30 kilobytes/sec for $46/month.
i have had 3 other broadband services before when i lived in other places- cox cable, verizon dsl, and roadrunner cable, in which i payed around the same price as this service (on average between $40-$50/month.
id like to know what the advertised speeds down and up are of these 3 services so that i can tell zoom-dsl and see if they can do something about it (i doubt they will, but if they dont keep customers happy they wont have business, so they should care) like make me pay less or give me regular broadband speeds.
i need to know the rate in kilobits, i already know that most of the time i downloaded at 80 kilobytes/sec, between 100 and 150 was when i was on a good server, and it could go up to around 200 and a little higher in excellent conditions. im sure u all know how fast it is since you have NORMAL services unlike zoom dsl.
any other advice as to how to get them to give me better speeds for what im paying for would be helpful, or if anyone else has used zoom-dsl and can help me out.
ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED - zoom dsl is the only service provider out in my area so i can't just switch, otherwise i would. PLEASE HELP! thanks very much,
ian

ok, this doesn't make any sense. on the dsl reports test it says mine is fast, yet it can only download at 32 kilobytes/sec, which isnt fast. this whole kilobits thing confuses me even though i know there are 8 kilobits in a kilobyte.
also mccoffee, something is wrong, when i had roadrunner i had the slowest (cheapest) one and i could download at speeds of over 100 kilobytes/sec, but u'r saying its 200 kilobits download, which would be slower than what i have right now, and would only let me download at 25 kilobytes/sec, but i could download at over 4 times that fast. also the cox one sounds a little high, but i guess its about right considering overhead and everything. thats the problem, i cant get cox anymore cause i moved, so i need to find some way to get zoom-dsl for fast and the regular price of $40-$50/month.
i dont understand how the speeds and prices can be so different, shouldn't they all be the same? i mean, 3000 with cox vs. 256 with my crappy one, both for the same price, whats up with that? with the "Zoom5 - 1.5M down/256K up - $149.95/month " i can get half of what cox gives for 3 times the price. that is what also confuses me, i was pretty sure that 1.5M down meant u could download 1.5 megabytes per second, and for this price u should be able to, but divided by 8 it is 187.5 kilobytes/sec, about what i used to get with the cox $45/month service.
can someone please explain why this is? i always thought that when someone had a 1.5M dsl line that they could download 1.5 megabytes every second (well, less cause of overhead) but now they are telling me that u have to divide by 8, which makes it barely anything for the price u pay for it.
ok, well im ranting about the same thing over and over, but that is because no one has understood my exact question yet, so please help.
EDIT: PS, i cannot find the roadrunner speed on their website, but it says up to 50 times faster than dialup, which is what i found when i had it, and zoom-dsl is 5 times faster (256/56 is about 5), which means roadrunner is truly 3000 like mccoffee said, compared to zoom-dsl which is 256, over 10 times slower, yet $1 more expensive!!!
my question is why, and what can i do about it - i just cant believe they could charge more for a service that is over 10 times worse.

I don't know what area you are in but I have Earthlink which is in partnership with Time Warner and I get 2000 dn / 384 up. Road Runner offers the same but I pay 41.95 where as when I had RR I was paying 49.99......every bit counts. I am in the Mississippi area but anywhere you can get Road Runner you should be able to get Earthlink.

RoadRunner - cable - 2000/384
Cox - cable - 3000/256 (except in some places in CA 1500/128)
Verizon - DSL - 768/128 or 1500/128
:) :D
