You've picked the best desktop NIC there is! 3COM 9XX series rule!

Hi...

Ok... but, to use with ADSL, can u REALY feel a better performance using this card (3com) instead of a Realtek (encore), for example???

Well, for general websurfing, not, not even comparing a...ugh...realtek, or any other sub 20 dollar NIC, against a good one like a 3COM or Intel. Netgear is the only other brand I like. It's those 3, or none.

But if you're a gamer, occasionally go to LAN parties, etc...then yes, you'll notice a difference (lower pings due to better hardware controllers and drivers). Or if you run a gaming server, and have many concurrent hits, you'll see a BIG difference in a quality NIC vs some el-cheapo kingston or realtek. If you run a gaming server for something like a big LAN party, with over 50 or a hundred peeps, then you need to kick up even more to a server class NIC, which will run over a hundred bucks. Something like a 3COM 990XP NIC. Will let many people connect, and not even break a sweat. Try some realtek NIC in that situation, watch it crumble to its knees and skyrocket pings all over the place.

Didn't notice a thing, better than most who think they can natively speak/write in English...so don't worry!

A lot of energy is spending the search of the non-existing "Holy NIC Grail".

Most of the activities done by Home user, i.e. Internet, gaming, etc. use small amount of the capacity of any 100/10 NIC. (Actually 10 Mb/sec NIC will suffice a lot of times).

The differences between cards kick in when the Network consists of many computers, doing heavy network exchange. In other words it does not matter which card you are using for small home Network.

Tom's hardware compared three NICs. (Aug. 2001)
I used Pricewatch.com to find the best price for these NICs.

1. 3Com 3CR990-TX-97 - $80
2. 3Com 3C905C-TX - $30
3. SMC 1211TX - $13

Quote From: http://www6.tomshardware.com/network/01q3/010820/nic-11.html#conclusion

"Well, there is some difference between Network cards. The difference was not that great. Some cards did have better performance than others, but over all most of the cards performed within acceptable ranges. "

If you read the rest, you can infer that if there is a difference it will impact high volume cooperate Network, not three computers sharing the Internet at home.

No difference in performance...the subtle differences are in remote management features, something you will not be doing on your home LAN. Just get whichever one you get a better price on, or whichever model your favorite supplier has. As long as your in the 9XX family...they're good.

And install with the latest drivers, I believe they're still at 5.4...white cd with the package. Also you'll want to install the NIC doctor utilities....

3com or Intel, those are the two I trust the most, and are the most reliable

Why,why, Why do people go out and put $2000 in a computer ,put all the ram the mother board will take, put the best video card money can buy. Then get cable or DSL, then pay for the most bandwidth they can get. Then go out and pay $9 for a lan card and D-link or linksys router or hub. Then come to a forum and ask how can i get more speed or my ping is to high or ask why they lag so bad in games or I want set up a fast game server so 10 people can play with low ping .What they end up with is a ton of money in there computer trying to run it through a $30 network. You get what you pay for people. There is a reason why a $9 lan card is not as good as a $60 one. Why one router sell for a $100 and one sell for $60. Can anyone guess why?
For some reason people get mad if you tell them it because they have a sh*t network set up. Because they think they got a good deal on a $9 land card and a linksys or d-link router. I hope I don't make everybody mad,
