View Full Version : Win2K Boot sequence & Net Neighborhood
I have a cable modem attached to a linksys befsr41 router. My wife and I are both attached to the router and can access the net with no problems. We've set up our network properties so that we are both in the same workgroup (so we can share the printer and drag/drop to each other's disk).
The situation is that when I'm the first system to come up (and she re-boots after I do) we can both see each other in network neighborood, and life is good.
But if she is up and running and then I reboot (due to win updates usually), I can no longer see her in the network neighborhood (but she can still see me). The only way to correct this that I know of is to have her (inconveniently) reboot her system.
Am I missing something in some setting in Win2K?
Thanks in advance, Jerry

Not sure if you are missing a setting but why don't you map a drive to the share(s) on her machine and set them to reconnect at boot.

On her computer, turn off Master Browser, and LMAnnounce, under properties of File and Print sharing. Should slow down the "arguements" between the computers.
Also, you're probably using the DHCP service of the router to govern TCP/IP. If so, try NetBEUI instead as your protocol for networking, leave TCP/IP unbound to networking, loading only for internet access.
If you just want TCP/IP alone, I find that manually assigning a static IP, gateway, and DNS, helps better, then relying on the routers very basic DHCP service.
There is also a well known browsing delay with Win2K, just go to your favorite search engine, such as www.google.com, and enter "windows 2000 network browsing delay" and read up on all the hits. You're not the first one to find this issue...
FYI, I've tried that registry edit....on one machine, it helped, on another, no difference, and on a third....blue screened on reboot. heh.
Cyber - I used to have a mapped drive that was set to re-connect on a re-boot, but it couldn't find the connection due to the described error (where I re-booted while her system is active).
Ye - I'll check the recommnedations you've suggested. I'll let you know the results. Thanks for the input.
Jerry
Ye - I checked the items you recommended. They appear to be relative to problems with Win98 systems but I'm not using Win98 at all. This is all occuring with Win2K on both systems. Jerry

Which protocol are you using for file/print sharing?
File & Printer Sharing for MS Networks

...bound to tcp/ip or netbeui?

Have you given this a try?
I'm not sure how to do that. I cannot view the file/print sharing properties in Win2K since the property button is grayed out.
How do I bind the proper services to the protocols in Win2K?
Yes - I'm letting the router provide the DHCP services.
Under Network and Dial-up setting, select Advanced, then advanced settings.
