System Restore Vs Backing Up Registry

Is it better to turn off system restore in xp and just back up registry or leave system restore on ?

also everytime i install like software or something that doesnt involve me doing anything with the registry and say all of a sudden my pc starts screwing up can i just click on the backup registry i saved and it will be ok just liek system restore works?


well if its better to just back up registry can someone tell me how to back it up and save it

LEAVE SYSTEM RESTORE ON, system restore is more through in terms of error correction and un doing system critial changes.

See help thread, turn system restore off, it is a resourse hog:),

In fact buy Norton Ghost to backup system or partition, XP comes with backup utility, below in help thread, backing up registry in XP wont save you like 9x:)

Once you have everything working perfect on your system, defragged and everything make a restore point and turn it off, do this monthly so if you add new apps they will be in your latest restore point. This way if something happens you can go back to a point when everything was working perfect. It's also a good idea to backup any important documents, your favorites, email addresses etc. so you have them on disc incase your hard drive crashes or something. Also it's a great idea to install the Recovery Console, read what I posted about it here (http://www.tweakxp.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=7542&sessionID={05379904-A428-47F4-9CBD-5E27F14C97B4}), it can be a lifesaver.:) :D

ok i just made a restor point since my pc is is good working order so if i go ahead and turn system restore off how will i be bale to use that sytem restore point i just made?

If your pc won't boot due to a problem it will give you the option of using the last known good configuration which is the restore point you just made. You can also access it from within Windows under the System Restore tab in the start menu.:) ;)

Thats just a Microsoft Scare Tactic, I make a resore point and shut it off. Like Lobo said , "it is a resouce hog.:D
