Is the router set up on DHCP so that when a computer starts up it gives it an IP adress. Also in the TCP/IP settings of the computer, it must be set to obtain IP automatically.

This is just a start. Post back here if those settings were correct.

Are the connect lights on the router lit up? There should be a light for each port on the router that is connected to something and working.

Make sure WinXP network setup, you have Local Area Connection 1 with the correct network card, and with TCP/IP set to obtain auto.

When plugged into the router, you should be able to reboot the computer, then bring up your browser, and connect to 192.168.1.1 Double check your browsers connection method.

Can you bring up the command prompt, type in "ipconfig /all" without the quotes, and see an IP address of 192.168.1.100 or 101? If not, must get to this point first. Double check your wiring, double check the Linksys manual, they really do give you a good one, especially the quick start guide.

If you can, now it's time to log into the routers web admin, according to the directions. On the ATT cable setups that I did in my area, they allowed you to log on using a special DNS host name, unique to each customer. Something like CE12345a You must enter that in the router setups first page, "Router Name". That's all I did, besides powering down the router and cable modem for 15 minutes. Then power up the router....then the cable modem.

if you are just trying to reconfigure the router just change your ip to the same private subnet reboot and connect to the router.

goto network properties or whatever in windows, set to assign static ip address: 192.168.1.2 mask: 255.255.255.0, reboot, then connect to 192.168.1.1

Can you connect to the router admin page?

Is the XP firewall active?
What IP address do you get when you boot up?

Could it be that we need to export the MAC address from the machine that worked previously to the router?

also double check and make sure you have nothing in the uplink port

I might be able to help you with this although i dont have any xp experiance. but i had the same problems. I am using a dlink wireless router so the same principles applie

you have to make sure that you release and renew your ip address

your ip for the computer if you are using dhcp should be something like 192.168.1.xxx or if you are using a static ip off the router it should be about the same.

If that still doesnt work try pingin your router i am assuming that your router since it is a linksys is using 192.168.1.1 where dlink uses 192.168.0.1, double check this

let me know what you get

do what i said previously, I have seen this problem a thousand times ... change your ip to static on the same private net.

ip: 192.168.1.2
mask: 255.255.255.0

then connect to 192.168.1.1:80 or :23

start==>control panel==>Network and Internet Connections==>Network Connections==>LAN or High-Speed Internet==>Change settings of this connection==>Click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on Properties==>Click on Use the following IP address: and enter 192.168.1.2 for ip address 255.255.255.0 for subnet mask and enter 192.168.1.1 for gateway. Also use 192.168.1.1 for dns.

go into my network places. Right click on your network connection in there, and click on properties. Next click on properties again. Now, in that little list that comes up, find Internet Protocol(TCP/IP), highlight it, and then click on properties.

The first thing that comes up will be a screen that says, Obtain IP adress automatically. Instead of that click on the use the following IP adress button.

In the IP field put: 192.168.1.2
In the mask field put: 255.255.255.0
Gateway field: 192.168.1.1

edit: greed beat me to it

plug in and make sure the gateway and dns properties are set up the same you did it before to connect to the router, if you are just going to use static ip's set the next computer you plug in to 192.168.1.3 the next to 192.168.1.4 .... so on and so forth.

enjoy.
