View Full Version : Remote Desktop Winxp to Win98?

Yes I was fiddling around with that Remote Desktop Feature on Winxp Pro. Well I have some questions about it.

Okay I have 2 computers
1 with Winxp Pro
1 with Win98se
These computers are in the same house networked with a Smc Router. I was just messing with Remote Desktop to see If I could get it too work. Plus It would be useful for helping friends with computer problems i guess.


So I follow the instruction on how to enable remote desktop blah blah.Then I go to my Win98 computer to test it. Put in user name,password bingo bango I see my Winxp Pro Desktop.

I was like this is pretty cool (yet freaked out the evil people on the internet may do this too me!!) Well it was cool so I decide to go to the Winxp Pro machine to see if I could do the same.

I typed in the Computer name So I can Log into the Win98 Box. But No dice or slice All I get is this

So is It possible for Winxp Pro To Remote Desktop The Win98?? If So what am I doing wrong?
Cause it did work the other way around.

The XP PC is the server, the 98 PC is the client. So you can only go one way.

You need a server for the 98 PC.

VNC does the same thing, but in order to go both ways you need a remote server running on both.

Sorry, I haven't done it with the XP method, but it sounds like it only installs the remote server to the XP machine, and the client (viewer) to the 98 machine.

Okay. So how would I go about setting up a remote server on Win98? Is it some long complicated hassle? Cause if so I'll just forget it then.

Many different apps can do this.

Netmeeting, VNC, Tight VNC, Remote Administrator take your pick.

If you use VNC it is easy enough to learn. Same for Tight VNC

In Netmeeting, it's the desktop sharing you want.

The VNC apps are free, Netmeeting comes wioth windows, and Remote Administrator is a shareware app.

remote administrator is by FAR the easiest program ever.

install, restart, connect, takes 2 minutes and couldnt be easier to use
