Which Cable modem will work?

Hi there

I am interested in getting a 2nd cable modem. My computer is hooked up to the internet through one, but soon my PS2 will be online as well. The problem: My computer and PS2 are at totally different areas of the house.

I would like to just buy a 2nd cable modem for the ps2 to hook up too. But when I spoke to rogers(my cable provider, I am in ontario canada) they said only their modems would work with their service. Is this true? I was looking at buying the RCA DCM105 DIGITAL CABLE MODEM..will this work? and is it any good?

Try a wireless router! That way you won't have to pay for 2 accounts. Usually the Cable ISP will charge the same amount for the second modem. They will charge for the second IP if you need one running a HUB.

I looked into that, but they are $299.99 cdn. I can get another cable modem for about 80$cdn. I was thinmking that all i have to do is get another cable modem, hook it up to the cable and then have it connected to the ps2. I dont think another ip address of account would be needed. and if i had too, i would disconnect the pc when i needed the os2 online and vice versa. I am a newbie to all of this, so i could be talking outta me @$$.

I still not sure if those rogers tech's know what their saying when they tell me that no other modem will work if its not from them..i picked the rca because of the $

No you can't do that. They record the MAC address of you Cable Modem that is how they control access to their system. Otherwise anyone with Cable TV would just be able to go out and get a Cable Modem plug it in and be on the internet. Now if you were to buy a second cable modem, you could get service for each cable modems at ~$40-60 per modem a month for a total bill of $80-120 a month. Or, you could buy that wireless router for $299, or (if you don't want to use the PC and the PS2 online at the same time) you could just unplug the cable modem from the PC move it to where the PS2 is hook it up and be done with it for no extra$. That is what I'd do since the NAT function of the router is probably gonna mess up your games with the PS2 anyways. Save that extra $ to buy some PS2 games.

Shockwave11:I don't think you can run two modem off the same cable to your house, My isp said one modem per house, I would call your ISP and tell them what you want to do and see if you can.

Use ICS or Internet connection sharing.. if you have 98upgrade and above you can do this.. just use your computer as a Host and let your PS2 run off it it.. I can't remember what type of hook up it needs if its ethernet cable friendly thats the way to go or perhaps USB.. I'll give you a few links here to follow.. but again this is the way to go to avoid getting another modem.. and since some ISP's don't like you to network.. they cannot detect this even if you are using a HUB after doing these settings.

I work for Comcast and yes you can have multiple modems at a single address. I do not know why you would want to do that. I would run a CAT5 cable and use a router so I did not have to puchase an additional IP. I don't think you would like the results with a wireless.

if i could run another modem, then why would i want to buy a router? arent they like $150? can get a cable modem for $80.00. Again the com[puter is upstairs and the ps2 is up downstairs

You won't be able to run 2 modems. Only one MAC address can be registered to a ip.:D

Would u spend 80 dollars on something that wont work and then spend another 150 on a router... or pay 150 now and get something that will work..

I know about the cables and wiring.. I have rogers too.. I have 3 rooms wired both on the top floor and 1 in thebasement.. tis not that hard to get a line around.

Also, a router is more than just internet sharing... what if you get a new computer some day? you can use that router to connect all yer comps to the internet. You can even play lan with friends too!

I'd say go with a router it's easier and it's almost gaurateed to work.

I don't think that you understand that if you go buy another modem Comcast will charge you double from what you are already paying. You cannot just hook up a modem and it will work. That modem must be provisioned and have an IP. So if you want the PS2 connected your only options is pay double for another modem added to your cable account or install a router, wireless or run your CAT5 wire. The only thing you would be saving by buying another modem is the monthly rental charge.

I say screw the Idea of a router or having 2 cablemodems. Use what you got and save your $ for some more games. The router would work great if you were looking to just run multiple PC's behind it. However, you are looking to run your ps2 behind it. Which isn't going to play nice with the NAT feature of the router DMZ or port forwarding or not. Your best bet is just to disconnect the cable modem from your Computer and then hook it up to the ps2 when you want to use it.
