I am dumb. So this is a dumb question. I have a ADSL connection. My Brite Port DSL modem has gone to heaven after two years of service. I recieve my IP addy from the server, DCHP? My ISP says my modem stinks and I need I new one. They say I can buy one anywhere. I have been to Fry's, Best Buy, Circut City, The Computer Store, nobody sells DSL modems off the shelf in Dallas.
They say my ISP will have to sell me one. The stores have routers out the wazzo. I don't want to wait 8 weeks for a new modem from my ISP (Jumpnet). What can I do? Can I use a router for a modem or does the router have to have a DSL modem?

dude.. from what I know about these kinda connection, although not a lot, I know that you can't use the router as a modem. As it's name incurrs, it just allows you to share your connection around with different computers! If I'm wrong let me know, please! But nah... I think you need the actual modem! Actually, I think it would work, but you'd need filters. Oh nooo... conflictin info in my head! Maybe it'd work with filters!

Something is definitely not right here.
No, you can't normally buy an ADSL modem. They are normally supplied by your ISP.
Eight weeks? Sounds like your ISP is in trouble.
No, a router cannot be used as a modem.
I'd ask a few more questions of the ISP, find out what is going on.

well i dunno about the US but in the UK you can buy the ADSL modems. You can get them from the ISP or from shops.

Dallas59, try the small local ISPs in your area. They normally have a small stock of modems on hand. After all, service is where their focus is.
There are currently 2 RFCs for aDSL service, PPP and bridged, while most support both protocols, some only support one or the other. Until there is a single standard and DSL is more thoroughly understood by retailers, don't expect them to show up on store shelves.
