Cable vs. Dsl | Usb vs. Network Card

Hi im new on these forums and i have a question

Right now I have DSL and i dont read the e-mails that they send to me so i dident know that they set a bandwith limit to i kept on doing what i always do downloading, uploading and i almost tripiled my bill.

So I am switching to Cable so i want to know is there much speed difference?

Also i wanted to know what is faster with cable a NIC or USB modem. :confused:

Generally cable is much faster than DSL unless you are paying for more bandwidth for instance where I live there is Cox.net (cable) and Verizon (DSL), Cox is $35 a month and capped at 3000/256 and Verizon is $35 a month and capped at 768/128 or $45 and 1500/128. As for USB or NIC - NIC definitely, faster and much more stable.:)

Well the cable im looking into getting is 1.5 Mbps Download and 192 Kbps upload is that good? or not?

And does it matter how much ram u have? speed wise?

Yeah that's good, that's probably the average caps for most cable ISPs some are more some are less.:)

cable adn dsl are about the same speed, but it depends on what the provider is selling the packages at.

are u on sympatico dsl an planning on getting rogers hispeed?
rogers is going to have limits too by the end of the year or so

Cable vs DSL...which is faster, the answer varies according to where you live, which ISP's are in your area, what packages they offer, line quality around your home/neighborhood....a few other things I'm sure I'm forgetting. So what one person experiences is not universal for the entire world, no matter how hard they insist...as to which is better. Where I am, generally cabls is faster than common DSL through the local phone company, but I use DSL through a high quality ISP, same speed package, 1500/128, but just a better ISP, and it blows the phone company and cable ISP away, especially ping wise (which is important to me for online gaming).

As to a USB NIC vs a PCI NIC...realistically, on a LAN, a PCI based NIC will have better throughput, but you're most likely just using it for web surfing....and you're broadband connection is FAR FAR below the limits of a USB NIC throughput. NetGear makes a good USB NIC that we use in our service department, on computers to download windows updates, patches, etc etc. In the past year, on, oh, I don't know how many hundreds of computers I've used it on, it hasn't failed me yet. Just plug it in, feed the driver disk...dont' even have to reboot...BAM...online to windowsupdate, etc.

USB used to have a reputation for being unreliable, but since Win2K, and XP, heck, even Win98, I've yet to see a USB NIC have a hiccup.

Now for hardcore online gaming, or LAN use transferring huge files, I'll stick with a good PCI NIC like a 3COM 905...better performance due to all hardware controller based. But USB NICs are great for the average user.
