Hey guys, let me start by sayin I have Speakeasy IDSL which is 144k down and 144k up, i know it's slow but I mainly got this connection for the pings and how it never disconnects, but I have this weird problem and I think it's my router...

I get this strange packet loss sometimes and i'm wondering if it's my router or my ISP? I have a Linksys (the 4 port one) BEFS41 or something..

I'd ping google when I get packet loss and i'd get like 10 percent loss, but in Warcraft 3 on battle.net even 10 percent packet loss means they can disconnect you..

I thought I fixed my problem the other day when I reset my router to default factory settings but now I played today and I got disconnected again, I then pinged google and saw that I had more packet loss, this time around 10 to 25 percent and sometimes 50 percent!

Right now i have my router disconnected and i'm getting 0 percent packet loss but I bet if i reconnect my router i'll also get 0 percent packet loss, i'd really like to know where to start on how to fix my problem.. I have the latest Linksys router firmware.. but my nic card I can't find the driver for it's the "Netgear FA310TX 10/100" adapter.

I pinged to my router and got no packet loss (192.168.1.1) but when I ping my gateway I got some packet loss... packet loss to my own gateway?... that's kind of bad isn't it?

Here's my test information from Speedguide:

SpeedGuide.net TCP/IP Analyzer
TCP properties for IP = (dsl092-150-186.wdc1.dsl.speakeasy.net)
Browser/OS = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows NT 5.0)
Note: Read the FAQ if the above is not your IP address.

TCP options string = 020405b401030300

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 11680
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 11680
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 467.2 kbps (58.4 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 186.88 kbps (23.36 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
Consider increasing your RWIN value to optimize TCP/IP for broadband.

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 55 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = OFF

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

Can anyone tell me how I can figure out if it's my router that's causing the packet loss?

u can eliminate the router as a posibility easily, jus tconnect the PC stright to the modem adn see if it still happens, which i think it will.

or you could goto your routers ip 192.168.1.x goto advanced find" block wan request" and make sure it's disabled if that was enabled you will have faulty ping also make sure you have lastest firmware click network help in my sig and do a search for the model of ur router. :D

I set my router on block wan request disabled and the packet loss was still there when i pinged google so i disconnected the router entirely and just hooked the modem straight into the computer.. the packet loss was gone, so i quickly re-attached my router again to double check and now the packet loss is gone again with the router connected, i think what is happening is this packet loss is probably normal because i get these bursts of packet loss for about 10 - 30 minutes then my connection is perfect. I can ping my router too all packets come up, when I have packet loss though my packets aren't even reaching my defaulte gateway.. which is 1-2 hops away.. so i'm wondering if the packet loss to my gateway is normal.

Btw I have the latest firmware, it's dated like April this year. =)

acuttly the lastest is in may.. http://www.linksys.com/download/firmware.asp?fwid=1

did you try switching the network cable?? if not that might help beleave or not. Also make sure you don't have comps in the uplink port.

Yeah or you might wanna try this turn the dsl modem off, then turn router off, then the computers,

turn the modem back on, then the router, then the computers.

Yeah I know you typed ur provider and alsou pinged router.you might wanna edit ur profile Yeah I forgot sue me with computer specs such as chip speed, windows verison and amount of memory and also isp the router

That's what I have.. 1.42.7 but when i installed it it shows up as April 2002, not May 2002.. just a typo though all the other important stuff is there. Also the packet loss always seems to come up around 11 PM to 1 AM.. which is weird.. maybe this packet loss is normal

also see if you could take out the hop in the router if it's 2 hops a way try it at 1 if set to one disable it. just a thought

I have got no packet loss by using just the modem and not connecting it to the router.. i'm golnna try it today and tonight just to make sure it wasn't luck and see how it goes.
