I have had telewest broadband for about 9 months, started with 512 kbps, web pages appeared to be quick but when i set myself up to connect to my mates FTP site i could only download at 4kbps(Really bad i know) so i reported it on various occasions and did speed tests and they were all OK infact better than OK they were excellent.
If i download from a website it seems to be about 40 to 50kbps but terrible on FTP. There is only myself connected to my mate if he connects to me then he get an average 30kbps.
When all this started about 9 months ago i just resigned myself to the fact that this was OK because accessing web pages was faster than dial up i just didn't bother to FTP.
The thing that has started this back up for me again is i decided to upgrade my connection to 1mb and when i FTP i am only getting 12kbps and my mate who is on 512kbs connection is downloading at 30kbps.
I have noticed downloading from webpages that it starts off quite fast about 170kbps and drops to about 40kbps or lower, but is a constant 12 on FTP.
This is the first time i have put this on a forum , i just wondered if anyone could help becasue the support line say that this is OK and it certainly can't be if my friends got a slower connection but he is quicker.
I have windows 2000 pro srv pack 2 , AMD 1333, 650mg ram, 40gb HD, 3com etherlink 10/100 pci tx nic, motorola surfboard sb4100 modem, all the latest drivers.
I have wiped it clean and put win98 before and this didn't make a difference , changed network cable is deffinate cat 5
FTP server = serv u, ftp client = cute ftp & flash fxp
Please can someone help
Thank you
