Hi there Tweakers,

I have a new Toshiba Cable modem with both a RJ 45 outlet and a USB outlet. I am using the 45 connected to a network card. What if one also used the USB in addition to the 45? Would you see any gain? If so, how would you configure the darn thing? I have the software for the USB connection, but it has not been installed yet.

Best,
Snot

No you wouldn't, if anything it could cause problems. Just use the ethernet connection.:)

Usually modems with both USB and RJ-45 ports work by giving precedence to one port... Usually the USB... So if you have both USB and Cat5 connected to the modem, only one will work, depending on its internal logic.

Usually the Ethernet port is more stable/has less overhead/is a bit faster, so you are already connected to the Cable modem in the best possible way.

Either way, the LAN side of the Cable modem is faster than the WAN side, so even if you connected it to a Gigabit Ethernet you'd still get the same speed. The LAN side is not the bottleneck of the connection.

Thanks philip and steele for the heads up before I completely screwed up something with experimentation. I am sometimes like a bull in a china closet!
