View Full Version : New HOSTS file
I searched the net for updated HOSTS files, merged them all with my own, sorted it, and removed all the duplicate entries.
It blocks most banner ads, and a lot more..
Download (http://home.cogeco.ca/~steadman/hosts.zip) the latest version zipped..
Enjoy !! :)
Hi Norm
Thanks for the Heads Up on this.

Let me ask you this, with your host file enabled, can you back out of this page (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=rojak+pot&spell=1). Go to the first rojakpot link and try to back out of it to google.
I found with the host file I had a problem going backwards on a lot of pages.

same here
but instead of hitting the back button, i just click the arrow and select the page i want to go bck too. (IE)
it took 4 clicks of the back button to get back
it's cause it goes through the ads trying to refresh them each time
does the same thing without this hosts file too, it's just cause he's got too may damned funky ads :D
Minir, yes, it's newer than the one I posted the other day.
After getting that dos app that sorts and removes the duplicate lines,
I went around and got more hosts files off the net and resorted it all to come up with this latest one.
RoundEye, I can back out of that link, all the way back to google, no problem. Either it has nothing to do with the hosts file, or it is because I'm on 98SE IE 5.01 SP2, I don't know. I went deep into the site and came back to google, no problem.
Welcome guys, if I redo it again later, I'll repost.

hmm
extract hosts file
comp locks
reboot takes 5-10 mins, and 100% cpu use by task manager
any ideas?

any ideas? Nothing to do with the hosts file, or the way it's zipped.
It's your PC. You muck with it too much.
Get a test machine if you want to muck aaround :)

Why doesn't 'what' work? Speak english boy.
muck around = Overclock, install everything under the sun (re: 3rd party software), play with settings, try new ideas etc etc.
Where did you extract the hosts file to?
question, could having a large hosts file slow down internet browsing?
since when you go to each page it has to search the hosts file ?
so if it was huge wouldn't it take longer to search all the text in it?

C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc
As soon as i extracted the sys locked and task manager showed 100% cpu usage
Comp is fine now that I deleted it
Perhaps its too large for win 2k and its not liking it?

it's not too large lol
extract it first to a folder, then copy and paste it into that directory..
do it with no IE windows open...

I also had one that was 1.5 MB and no slowdowns with it either.

Hi Norm
Thanks, am D/L the New one now.

minir
Welcome minir.
I thought I should mention for the newbs....
This hosts file contains a lot of links to many sites. If you can't reach a site at some point while surfing, it may be because that site is in the hosts file.
To get to sites that are "blocked" due to a hosts file entry, just rename the hosts file (hostold), close IE, clear your IE cache, and try the site again.
Rename it back to hosts when you need it again.
For NT or Win2K it goes in C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc , or whatever drive (letter) you have the OS installed on.
For Win98 it goes in c:\windows

hey Norm
is it alright if I merge my host file of 900kb with your file of 700kb and get rid of duplicate entries and such..
The Reason I ask is because I block out lots of advertisements to pornsites.
What program did you use to weedout the duplicate entries?
Thanks.
I'll trade you, your hosts file for this LINK (http://ftp.unicamp.br/pub/simtel.net/msdos/txtutl/dedupe13.zip) to dedupe. It'll weed out the duplicates.
Thanks to Mondial, who gave it to me when I asked for a favor.
I want to block ads to those pron sites as well, thanks.

nvm ... found it
See my thread entitled, "Windows 2000 - hosts file system slowdown conflict."
http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?threadid=86011
I had the 100% CPU usage slowdown too. (must've mucked my computer too much) But, the condition seemed to clear itself up after a while. Now everything works NORMally. win2k sp2, ie5.5 sp2.
Thanks for the file!:D
Have you tried rebooting again to see if you get the slowdown again, or is everything okay all way 'round?

Just rebooted... excessive CPU utilization for about 4 minutes. Starting with the Preparing network connections, then WinMgmt.exe, finally WINLOGON.EXE. After they were "done", the CPU utilization went to normal. Similar to a memory leak? Interesting... off to do more research.
found some more info on hosts file here (http://www.smartin-designs.com/) .
I tried to change the localhost from 127.0.0.1 to 0.0.0.0, as well as having the hosts match the localhost IP.... still does the same slow startup. Everytime I saved the file changes, the SERVICES.EXE process used 100% of the CPU for about 4 minutes (using an ever increasing amount of memory). When finally saved, or processed, the HOSTS file does it's job nicely. With or without Proximitron running.
Windows 98SE, best MS OS ever :)
It's all downhill from now on.

thanks

I guess that it could boil down to your hard drive and your connection. It looks to the host file before the DNS server on address translation.
IOW, when you click on a site, and it has ads, part of the window go to the site and others parts go to the ad server to retrieve their ads.
So, how fast would it take your hdd to check the host file as opposed to how fast your connection can hit the DNS server, head to the site and head to the ad sites as well... If that makes sense... :D
Roundeye,
Yes, ads actually "take" you to their site...
So, when you use a host file, certain ads that would normally direct a portion of your browser to their server to get the ad to view, are re directed to your puter instead...
That part of the window in your browser thinks that it went and retrieved the ad, however it just looped back...
But, that loopback in itself is like an actual window, so if you just clicked the large back arrow, you are just relooping to itself again...
If you click the small black downward arrow beside the back arrow, you can see how many windows that you have went through, or how many times you were directed to their ad server...
I hope that this doesn't confuse everyone...
I am using IE6 on XP Pro with a hosts file.
I am going to send this over to security forum.
rmrucker will be able to find it and respond to it then. He is awesome with this type of thing... ;)

Well, I bought a mouse that I can program the buttons. I have a button programed for the back button on the browser, and I use it a lot.
I running Win2k server and I have a domain set up with active directory and dns. Having a local dns server and a high speed connection makes my pages pop up very fast.
I deleted the host file, and I really don't care about the ads anyway. My pages actually come up faster without a host file, with the way my domain is set up.
I like windows 98se myself, but if you have a domain set up with local dns like I have, you would see how much faster your web browsing is.
:D

What is active directory used for?
RoundEye

Active Directory, which is an essential component of the Windows 2000 architecture, presents organizations with a directory service designed for distributed computing environments. Active Directory allows organizations to centrally manage and share information on network resources and users while acting as the central authority for network security. In addition to providing comprehensive directory services to a Windows environment, Active Directory is designed to be a consolidation point for isolating, migrating, centrally managing, and reducing the number of directories that companies require.
From Here (http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/technologies/directory/ad/default.asp)
RoundEye, if my pages came in any faster, they'd have to predict where I'm about to click.
They are practically instant as it is.
An in house DNS server would still be nice though :)

A lot bigger than my old hosts file...it seems to make My puter (win 2k) boot a lil slower but other than that its great Thanks!:D
I tried Ghost's suggestion again and got it to work. No slow startup with the DHCP and DNS services disabled.:)
Could someone please explain whats going on !!!
what is a hosts file , what does it do and where to put it .
Thanks!

Read this
http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/what_is_hosts.html
There may have been another thread around here that explains it... do a search.
Thanks for the link. good info there.
I have the IE-spyad which I think is also worth considering. It actually turns some sites into your restricted zone. If like me you have everything disabled in this restricted zone then its pretty good.
Just a few problems with hosts.
I have windows 2000. I read that this casues problems/crashes ?
also worried about internet speed. i have a dial up. i disabled the dhcp client and i found that i couldnt surf anymore.would these files really slow me down and is there anything i could do.
I would like to have the hosts simply because it really would enhance privacy . no more contacting ad-servers. no more profiling. but just those 2 problems . plus i tried replacing 0.0.0.0 from norms files. with 127.0.0.1 to try and avoid problems with Webwasher but in notepad would nt work . where can it try replacement? and has anyone else had probs with ww installed ?
Thanks!!!!!!!

Nice to see that someone is actually paying attention. ;)
I feel that the information I provided is very germaine to the subject of some computers slowing down under W2k with a large hosts file.
Glad it helped. :)

It appears to be loading in the memory, after that it goes fast, so if you have a little patience the 100% CPU will go off...
you need to put the HOSTS file in your
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
if you are running windows 2000/XP
