About 2 years ago I had my instant messenger screen name "stolen" or hacked or whatever the term is. The reason I know this is because when I tried to go online it told me I was already online (cute right?) Anyway my question, as it sort of relates to the question I posted yesterday about how long an ISP keeps IP logs, is how long would I realistically be liable for anything that was said or transfered over my "stolen" screen name. Is it realistic to think that 2 years later I should still be worried? Thanks for any input.

Send an email to the Instant Messenger mob and tell them that you no longer have access to the "screen name".

Then register with a new one and put the experience behind you.
After 2 years the expectation hat your "screen name" would be still available to you is a bit unrealistic.

Treat it the same as you would a HotMail account.

Welcome to SG, triceratops. Enjoy a long stay.

Thanks for the welcome. I did try to delete the screen name, and a screen name that I do have access to since I no longer use the service, but I can't figure out how. AOL says on their web site that "at this time we don't support the ability to delete a screen name" or something to that effect.

Pick a new one and run with that.

How often do you change zip codes?
I know its off the wall and personal.... but if you just take some advice about what is to be done for you as a result of losing your screenname, you can get another one.. a slightly better one.. I mean I don't get everything I want and I don't get to keep everything I have.. but one thing is for sure you can't take me away from me.. you are who you are with or without a screenname...

I'm not a fool, if someone takes my screenname and I find out well I'm going to have a talk with myself because after all its my screenname. Thats not good advice. its better to get a new and improved screenname and go about yo' business. 2 years from now you'll post again and say 4 years ago someone stole my screenname.. guess what? I got it back. :D

My hotmail was hacked a few weeks back, I had some sort of modified GT bot that Norton didn't see. :( good thing I didn't let it connect to the IRC server that it was trying to... then I would have participated in DoS, and played as BNC etc etc. very nasty functions built in. Now it was just my Hotmail account, sad for the 10 ppl I had in my MSN list, cause I don't know their email adresses by myself.
