Hi guys

This may seem like a stupid thing to do but I want to do it just to experiment.

How would you set up 2 routers back to back?I can access the internet with the one router and then I have put a cross over cable from the lan port of the first router to the wan port of the second router. How do I get the second router to see the first?

I have disabled dhcp on the both and assigned static IP's. If I could get them to see each other I could set up two networks on different subnets right?

Any info appreciated

Thanks

You don't need a crossover cable. The WAN port of a router is an uplink port.

I have something similar here in my home office. My company laptop goes directly into the DSL modem/router. I have a nexland router which also connectes to the modem/router. All my personal machines and my girlfriend's are behind the nexland. This way my work and personal systems are separate.

I think you could disable NAT on the uplinked router and use static routing to connect the (sub)networks.

If I use a straight thro cable from the lan port of my first router to the wan port of the second router I dont get a link light on the second router but if I use a cross over cable I do?

I dont know how to get a connection to the internet thro the second router tho?

You can cascade routers easily, if you wish.

At the office, we have our LAN on the main Symantec router to our 6 meg DSL connection.

In the service dept, I have another router which the service guys can hook up several machines to...to download updates, patches, etc etc. They can just plug machines right into that router....which has it's WAN port simply go into any LAN port of our main router...and out to the internet.

How do you set the WAN port up? Do you give it a static IP or do you set it to recieve a ip from the first router through DHCP?

Thanks for the info!
