If Norton isn't seeing it, try F-Protect from DOS . Get the latest definitions and follow the instructions to run it from a floppy. BESURE TO WRITE PROTECT THE FLOPPIES, once the files are loaded to the diskettes. Try to get them loaded off of a clean computer. If this isn't possible, try house call anti-virus, It's a free online scanner.

Q: How can I run F-Prot™ for Dos from floppy disks?
A: You need two floppies:

Copy on diskette 1 f-prot.exe, english.tx0 and macro.def

Copy on diskette 2 sign.def and sign2.def

To Run insert diskette 1 of F-Prot™ and type:

f-prot /loaddef
Follow instructions on the screen.

Q: Where can I manually download the virus definition files?
A: The latest database for the F-Prot™ package is here:

ftp://ftp.f-prot.com/pub/macrdef2.zip

ftp://ftp.f-prot.com/pub/fp-def.zip

Computer hangs up just before the "Desktop" opens
You've installed a new component or changed a setting and now when the computer boots it "freezes" or "hangs" just when it seems that the desktop should open. This is a sign that the IDE controllers for the hard drive have become contaminated or had an improper setting installed. The repair procedure is the same as for correcting MS-DOS compatibility mode as mentioned above. First, boot to Safe Mode and run regedit by clicking Start, Run and typing in regedit and clicking Ok. In the window that opens click Edit and then find and type in: NoIDE and click Find next. Give it some time as it may take a few minutes. If found, right click the value and click delete, close regedit and restart the computer. If there isn't a NoIDE entry then the next step is click the plus signs by HKEY_LOCAL-MACHINE, ENUM, MF and then right click on CHILD0000 and CHILD0001 and delete each. Close regedit and restart the machine and select normal mode if prompted. When the machine reboots it will find new devices and ask to restart. KEEP TELLING IT NO until it is done and you are in the desktop. Then restart the machine.

I did what you said.. it didnt want to loadwindows after that. I reformated.. since all i could get was invalid system disk in a.
Then I shut it down and came back to it later and installed windows. This time I didnt add netbios.. since I dont share files and not networked. so far its running great! Maybe I need to replace the battery... since all this started with my clock changing also. DO I need netbios?

No to the Netbios and don't enable it over the TCP/IP either. That will close your 139 port to incoming crap off the web. You might want to change the battery so that you might avoid another problem like you had.

I ran into that before. At the present moment, I can't remember what the fix was. Let me dwell on that one awhile unless someone else has the answer now. :(

I removed windows media player then reinstalled it. I removed norton security. I purchased zone alarm pro. I like it! It has an internet lock.. when Im away from the computer. Also.. When zone alarm set up it caught messenger accessing the internet and it was even on. Im using AVG also.

Stack go into msconfig and see if "LoadQM" is checked in your start up tab, if it is, uncheck it and restart the computer. Bill and Company snuck that one by inside MSN Messenger and it doesn't need to load or have access to the internet.

Loadqm Loads the MSN Explorer Query Manager. Not required in startup.

Thanks.. oh messenger wasnt even on when zone alarm caught it. Impressed with zone alarm pro..it sleeker, runs smoother than norton.

Yeap, I like ZA too. One thing though, sometimes the darn true vector service files get corrupted. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen. If you should have a problem with it. Shutdown ZAP and go to your internet logs folder and delete everything in it. You'll have to reauthorize programs to access the net, but it will get you fixed up.

I clean my out on occasion anyway. The folder gets rather large in size after awhile.

Just a friendly ZA hint. :D

Wondering if I need this generic host that trys to access the internet when I open the browser or email?
