Hi,

This is an HP Pavillion 6355, Celeron 333mhz, 96MB, Win98, IE5.5,
dialup (MSN), 4GB with 1.8GB free. It has had Cookies, Temp, TIF's deleted and Scandisk and Defrag have been run. No virus detected.

It will dialup and connect to the ISP then cannot get the browser to open. I remember another one kinda' like this about 2 years ago ---- something about the Winsock.dll --- but i've slept since then.

I will appreciate your help so will my friend.

hmmmmmm, if you have the win98 disk, reinstall it . you won't be able to update if IE won't open. i say format.

start>settings>control panel>add/remove programs>double click IE5.5>choose repair option
If this does not work, install alternative browser such as neoplanet, mozilla, netscape, or opera
If it is for a friend, download and burn the software on a cr-r

microsoft internet explorer download site (//http://helpdesk.uvic.ca/how-to/support/win95/msiexpl.html)

Do as pawprint suggests and try and repair IE. Is MSN the only ISP installed on the pc? Has AOL ever been installed? When did the problem start, after changing anything?:)

Hi mno,

IE5.5 repair tool has been used. Msn is the only isp installed....AOL never.

Problem started about a week ago.....the MSN logon window would not close but could connect to the internet via MSN internet explorer. Then got rid of the logon window and can't connect using IE. Good connection to ISP though 52k+baud--not that it does any good.

IE message is "Page could not be displayed........"

That new MSN Explorer is bundled with MSNs Internet service and is required to connnect to the net. Can you connect via MSN Explorer and then minimize it and use IE?:)

I'll find out in the morning.....she's 1300 mi away and I don't have all the particulars yet.

I am trying to get a jump on it. Do some homework so we will not be on the phone all day!!

Thank you.

Rerun the internet connection wizard. Try extracting a new copy of wsock32.dll from sfc.

Try downloading and installing the DUN 1.4 upgrade for Win98. There are two DUN's, one for the first edition of Win98, another for Win98SE. You didn't specify which one this machine is.

It replaces/upgrades winsock and wsock32 files, etc.
