Im currently on my cousins computer while im awaiting parts for my newer computer. He is using Windows 98 SE. Right now when I try to run a program it will not run. (exe, shortcuts too the exe will not work also) It starts to load but then it doesnt run. However the programs I have on the desktop do work but it creates a vxd of the program with all of the data transfered to the vxd. So the main exe is about 300kb and the vxd is whatever the other amount is. (ex: exe = 300k, vxd = 10.7mb)
He is currently running Kazaa all the time and I was thinking it might be a virus. I had this probelm mabey two years ago but I just re-installed and he doesnt want to do that. He doesn't have any anti-virus's installed either. Im currently searching through my cd's to install one but I was wondering if anybody knows what the probelm is. and if there is another alternative to fixing it without re-installing windows.

If it helps any he has Intel Pentium 2 450mhz (:p quite laughable), 511mb of sdram, has 70gig harddrive capacity, and is running Windows 98 SE.

Thanks in advance.
Steve

One of 2 things comes to mind. 1 he has a virus or 2 his registry was corrupted and it reverted back to a previous state when those apps weren't installed yet. You might try reinstalling 98 over top itself and see if that fixes it and scan for viruses and run Ad Aware to remove the spyware from Kazaa.:)

Well right now Im running a anti-virus. It is about 33% complete and it has detected 29 virus's. (holy sh*t ) Im going to try ridding his com of the virus's but he will most likely have to format and then reinstall. (doubt he will though, but thats his choice.) Thanks for the input, I'll keep you updated.

OK! I got his com to work. I cleaned his system of the virus's but then i still had to re-install. So his computer is running fine now. I downloaded that ad aware. So I'll run that for him. Thanks for your help mnosteele52.

Yeah I know. I think the virus infected every exe that was opened. He didn't loose anything important so it was no real lose.

Riaa is shutting down kazza or so my g/f told me.
Last night she tried to d/l some tunes and she could'nt get the server. Same shut down message when she tried to run Audio Galaxy.

Another notch on Riaa's gun barrel. Even tho i hate kazza, it's a shame they shut it down. My g/f really like that little prog
