I replaced my Linksys Router w/a SMC Barricade Wireless. It was basically for the family notebooks but, although the convenience is nice, the computers that are wired are having horrible internet performance. (page refreshes, etc)

I swapped it back with the Linksys and my speeds are just fine.

My question is...

Am I still able to use this wireless router?

How would I incorporate/configure it?

Currently this is my setup...

DSL - Linksys router --> main computer/secondary computer/kid3's desktop/Linksys hub - -> kid1's desktop/kid1's laptop/kid2's desktop/kid2's laptop

If I get this wireless router hooked up, I'll be able to get the wife's laptop, my laptop and kid3's laptop all hooked up, too.

Or, I could realize how stupid it is for an 11yr old, an 8yr old and a 6 yr old to each have 2 computers - denounce all of this evil technology and move to a cabin in the mountains.

Thanks for the help.

Well, you can uplink the wireless router so it's WAN link simply plugs into the LAN side of the Linksys router. Have all your ethernet based computers plugged into the Linksys, and the wireless routers will use the SMC. So basically, the ethernet part of your LAN remains untouched, and the wireless router is sitting behind the Linksys...like a double NAT if you will. Loss of speed really won't be that noticable, as wireless is your bottleneck.

I've setup many many many double routed networks...router behind a router works fine. DHCP relays DNS with no problems.

Ideally you want a single router with a wireless hub linked from it...but hey, you already have two routers...and you can use both.

So as not to completely screw this up...

Leave the DSL going into the WAN on the Linksys Router... leave all the wired pc's alone...

Attach a cat5 cable from the Uplink on the Linksys router to the WAN on the SMC Wireless Router?

Or just into any of the ports?

Any additional configuration needed on the Barricade or Linksys?

...and thank you for the quick reply.

Yes, DSL modem to the WAN of the Linksys like you used to have. Ethernet computers to the built in switch of the Linksys like you used to have. But WAN port of the SMC plugged into one of the regular ports of the Linksys also...at the office I'm using a straight cable into a regular port of one of my main switches which uplink to the router, I believe you will just need a standard patch cable from the WAN port of your SMC to any regular switched port of the LAN side of the Linksys. If not, you will not get a link-light...so try for the uplink port of the Linksys...whatever gets a link-light to work on both sides. One note...when using the uplink port on the Linksys...cannot use the standard port beside it. It's one or the other.

Working like a charm.

Thank you so much OldeKitty.
