Got a situation here where a computer that's running windows xp is not allowing me to pull an ip. Instead, an error message comes up that says "An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection 3 : An Operation was attempted on something that is not a socket."

The closest thing that I found on the microsoft site is an issue with McAfee Personal Firewall causing basically a corrupt winsock within winxp. The fix, however, isn't applicable here, because the computer I'm working on never had that firewall on it...

I guess what I'm trying to ask is how do you rebuild the winsock in winxp? I've tried doing it in the same manner as I normally do with windows 9x, but still getting the same error message...

I think blowing away all the network protocols and the NIC drivers and then reinstalling them will reinstall winsock, maybe. anyway, thats what I would do. Remove all the Network stuffs and the NIC and reboot. reinstall protocols you need. Seems to me that 9 times out of 10 doing that fixes network problems like that, and it only takes about 10 minutes to do.

good luck :)

The thing is, that I've blown out both network cards (tried two different types), removed winsock (from both \windows\system32 and from the registry, and allowing the system to reinstall...still get the same error...

Even tried this command at someone's suggestion: netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

Still, no luck :(

ugh, sorry bout that indy. I know I have seen that error before, and I believe fixed it.

Will it work if you hard code an IP? sorry, not sure if you can do try that, but reaching here.

Make sure the DHCP Service is running. stop and start it again even if it is.

Do you have Zone Alarm installed? Even if it is turned off it can cause problems. I know I couldn't pull anything once and after uninstalling ZA everything worked, like i said even though it was shut down it apparently was still interfering.

Turn on then off the built in XP firewall.

eh, some things to try at least.

Man, this thing is driving me nuts...

Here's the thing...if I hard code it, it'll ping out, but can't get it to pull dns...

Zone Alarm's not installled, nor has it been (that I know of)...

Tried enabling/disabling XPs firewall...no joy...

Still getting the error "An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket."

Tried three types of nics: Built in to mobo, pci smc 10/100, & usb (from Toshiba pcx2000 modem)...get the same error across all three...

I'm almost positive it's an issue with WinXPs winsock, but can't get it to rebuild properly, if that's the case...half tempted to tell my customer that he needs to reload windows, but I want to exhaust all possibilities before I get to that bridge....
:(

damn indy, the only things I'm finding are the corrupt winsock also, and just to uninstall TCP/IP and reinstal it...still looking though :)

Too bad this machine isn't a win9x machine...would have been done and gone a long time ago :D

Nah, it's not even getting to the point where it can make it out to pull an ip...it keeps giving me that message & won't renew...
