Althought this topic is partly gaming related im going to add it here.

While playing online games I have noticed that my ping is not entairly stable. It averages at 100 but about every 5 secs it bounces up to 200.

At first I thought it was a server problem, but on every server from all over the world I tested it, same problem occur.

It is not game related either, I pinged different sites using windows ping command, ping goes up every 4 or 5 secs.

My comp specs are: Windows Xp with USB Aethra starmodem- adsl modem. I'll add the rest if needed.

Connection: ADSL.
ISP: Finnish, Elisa powered by kolumbus

Thanks in advance

try using tracert instead of ping (same syntax). This will give you a better idea of where the slowdown is happening. 100 is pretty high for ping response anyway...

I tried tracert as you suggested, on multiple servers. There doesn't seem to be any which makes that spike. Ping goes up as the range grows, but the growth is stable.

If you aren't spiking in either memory, cpu, or disk i/o, there isn't much you can about the pings. High ping is generally high traffic or poor line quality.

Hmmm, dunno then. I had 56k modem for several years before getting dsl. ISP and cpu were the same, but ping was stable.

On a machine that is being pushed to the limit, it isn't uncommon to see slow responses to network requests.

Tweaking doesn't help icmp performance, but there may be someone with more knowledge that can help.

Good luck,

Thanks anyway, I appreciate it. I guess I'll just call my isp and ask wtf is going on. I sent em email earlier, but the bastards didn't want to answer.

First get rid of the USB connection and get a NIC then download Cablenut and try the AFD buffers.:)
