I dont know whether to post this in the tweaking section or here, so I'll post it here for now

I've been getting some extremely annoying things happening since I switched ISP's a month ago

For one, I can only connect to 50% of the internet..... Connecting to any other sites just results in a timeout..... it doesnt work at all.
I've been using proxies to connect to the other sites, but now I find some FTP's arn't working for me either..... I can upload to the FTP's, but I cant receive the directory list, or download any files. It keeps telling me the transfer is completing, but nothing happens

Whenever I switch to more proxies I get the same thing.... switching to a proxy of any type makes websites work
turning the proxy off and only half of the internet works

I've asked my boss who is a computer tech about it and he says it's gotta be an MTU setting..... fine...so I come home, and go to change my MTU's in Win XP, and low and behold the setting isn't there..... speed tests set it at 1480, but no matter what settings I change, I cant change the MTU....not even using the SG optimizer program which says MTU is at 0... If I set it to the recommended from my ISP of 1454, and then reboot, it says it's 0 again....and it's also reading a D-link card which isn't even installed in my system. Not in device manager or anywhere... I'm running a realtek network card.

I cant figure this out and it's getting to the point where I'm going to phone my ISP and start yelling at them soon....I cant receive files from people....no direct connecting works..... FTP's dont work half the time....only connecting to half the internet......

gah...I dont get it.... please tell me you guys have some ideas

TCP options string = 020405a00103030201010402

MTU = 1480
MTU is optimized for Windows XP PPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for optimal throughput.

MSS = 1440
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1440, which equals MSS.
MSS is optimized for Windows XP PPPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for maximum throughput.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 255552
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 63888
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
506880 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
253440 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
126720 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
63360 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 10222.08 kbps (1277.76 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 4088.832 kbps (511.104 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = OFF

Time to live left = 55 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

Operating system : Windows XP

I'm on PPPoE ADSL with Nexicom or NRTCO, however you know them. They advertise 1meg down 700kbps up.

Speed test is 934 down, 134 up

I'm running the built in XP PPPoe broadband connection to connect, and the SG Optimizer cant seem to change my MTU no matter how many times i set MAXMTU and reboot to confirm it. It just keeps resetting to 0 each time I reopen the program

o...some more info I forgot

This cant explain the messed up FTPs, or the receiving files which I need to find out about though

I did a tracert on www.streamload.com . it's the most important of my internet sites seeing as I pay $30 a month for it

With the tracert, I get decent pings for the first 15 hops or so, then it starts timing out on me, finding a good hub and passing through it, then it times for good and I get full timeouts from hops 18 through 30.......it just stops mid trace somewhere in the middle of the US........this is what looks like is happening with the sites too. They look like they're trying to connect, then dont

like I was saying before though, as soon as I work with a proxy, everything works fine..... problem is I cant use free proxies for all the important stuff ....especially at their 8k speed

i had the same problem with verizon, they finally gave me a dummy ip address to configure and it stopped. hopefully your ISP's support staff is better then verisons..........check the set up manual that came with your service. it might be in the back.

thanks.... I'll check it out

Just cant figure out why it would be happening other than some kind of error in the ISP's DNS servers

You may have tried this already, but have you checked your subnet mask? If it isn't what it should be (from yr ISP) it could be why you can only surf to certain sites.

Hope this helps
