I am currently on Earthlink DSL, aka Junk, and am going to switch to Bellsouth DSL. From my understanding, Bellsouth has an option to send you a USB modem or a Ethernet modem. As I have both connections, I am wondering which is better and why. I believe I recall a Best Buy associate telling me that an ethernet connection is better because it has a higher data transfer rate. Is this true? Also, which is better PPPoE or PPPoA and what is the difference in computer illiterate terms? Lastly, which is the best modem for a Bellsouth DSL connection? Please email comments to frontierdave@earthlink.net and/or leave them here. I appreciate any info.

Ethernet would be your better choice. USB is going to use processor cycles to handle the transport, whereas a Nic is much less dependent on your processor.
PPPoATM and oE simply describe how the signal is carried between you and ISP. If you are going to a Bellsouth connection, you will have a PPPoE connection. Because of the peculiarities and differences between protocols and types of service regarding DSL, I would recommend going with the ethernet modem your ISP recommends.
Just dont get suckered into buying a Cisco 675. I love Cisco, but thats an End Of Life product, and for example, will not work with ANY ISP here in Jacksonville.

Bellsouth DSL is awesome man. I have had it for almost a year now, fast speeds, low pings. They're a high quality ISP.
