high pings

I've had very high pings recently after I had installed my router, it was giving me normal broadband pings until this week, the pings started to rise and i lagged some games according to network status feature in one of the games, it says I lost a bunch of packets, I don't get it, and then my video card died (driver corruption or something) so I restored my computer and found that the computer still lagged, so I'm about to undo the ports I had to open to play the games online.

What are some of the things I can check to see what the heck is going on?

try using http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks
or http://www.cablenut.com
search around. some stuff like that helps with packetloss. but sometimes not with pingtimes

I know the problem with the high pings, I opened the ports required for the games and it's heightning my pings, wtf if with that? either play games and get booted for high pings or not play games at all.

Routers technically do add to the ping, as they are another "hop"...but for one or two users at a time, even the cheapest of routers won't add much for ping. Have many people on your LAN at the same playing out through the router, then yes the entry level routers will really bog down a log....but again, one or two peeps won't cause much...maybe 5 - 10 ms.

Naturally, like everything else, there are performance and quality differences across the makes/models of routers. Of the affordable home routers (100 bucks and under), Netgear makes what I and many others consider to be the fastest. Above that, Nexland makes the ISB SOHO model, which is a bit more money (160 bucks), but it's very fast, and marketed for gamers, made for gamers. Above that, you'll find SOHO class routers from Netopia and Cisco, which won't break a sweat...very fast, and very expensive.

Latest firmware for your router also helps. And on some routers, you'll have MTU settings which you can turn on, set to 1492 or so, play around.

Opening ports shouldn't impact your performance.

The opening of ports are affecting my ping :)

I have the latest firmware and I play with no one else on my LAN (the other computers are off)

The differences are very dramatic, they are around 100 when I close the ports and when I open them, they go up to 1200.

This sucks.

hmm? i did open some ports a few days before this bs started happening. but ive never noticed the extra hop

What is your router BTW? And what ports are you opening? What do you have for internet access, and your ISP?

Router - Siemens speedstream 2602, 2 port Broadband router

Ports -

(btw, they are identical besides the public type, and for some reason, I can't play with only one opened)

ok fine, can someone tell me if I can use a DMZ host? they have an option for it, but it only allows you to edit the last 3 numbers:

the last 3 numbers of your ip adress

use dbz places you out side the NAC and firewall

but keep in mind your pc is out ther bare with a router ip but if you wanna game or ftp or what not just place in dbz and then when done take out

and what are you forwarding the ports for game ftp?/????

I put a thread up recently about this sort of thing (router and games and broadband)but it mysteriously started working again:D (I reckon it was something happening at my ISP end) but during the Prob.Determination I found that changing MTU Rwin did have an effect on games. Reckon you could come up with optimum settings for these use this website "speedguide".
What about IRQ settings/confllicts - I had a problem recently where my Lancard and Videocard were on same irq and I had major slowdown (UnrealTourney) - although this did not manifest itself as lag more like caused crashing out of servers or not being able to browse for servers. Soon as they were on their own irqs everything was supergreen.
Think of what changed a[art from the router? Did you reposition Lan ports,put power cables v.close to Lan cables or such like. If you cant think of anything that has changed what about configuring another PC as a software router (you will need 2 network card for this) maybe use winproxy (30day trial) its good I used to use it for games etc before I got a belkin broadband router.

ok, now i'm gonna go to the networking forum and report another problem, unless it's gaming related:

I play on the zone on one computer and when I do, the other computer on my network has the most sluggish connection to the internet, almost the speed of 14.4kps. :o

So, is it online gaming related? I hate mircosoft for their programs lagging me. everything else online is fine.. :p
