cable or dsl?

hi. I'm thinking of upgrading my net connection to either cable or dsl (lucky me, I have a choice). but I'm afraid of latency problems, especially with cable when every other cable user in my neighborhood gets on the net. is there a latency issue with cable or dsl?

depends on a few things the isp, own the lines or lease them how old are your cable/dsl lines do you live in a big town with a high broadband damnd could get it if u life close to alot of companys or small bis. most have dsl or cable

but in most case u will be ok mabye lossen 20ms in peak hours

if i was you id try cable 1st it should be cheep to get installed if you put the NIC (networkcard) in your self (Stay away from usb modem like the plage man)

as for dsl its price to install and most of the time slower

i use cable my self and love it i get 128ks up and 1.5megs down

peak times my lat. is fine 45-60

none peak 40-45

i game at peak times and cant even tell realy iv had a few props in the past with my isp latancey but they got them worked out in a week or so they where have props with ther network other then that works awesome

what the isp you got for choices? cable and dsl

who is closer to your house?

what are ther prices? and whats the download and upload speeds?

ask your freinds if any got them isp see how they like it

but my 1st choice would be cable as u i have dsl and cable avalable

i like my cable more its 50 bucks a month for 128/1.5meg its way faster then my budies dsl 128/756k (fastes they have) and hes closer to dsl hub house (or what ever they call it)

personally i like dsl better...if you're using this connection to play video games, dsl has faster ping times...or at least in my area...cable has the potential to go faster but with lots of people on it, you may be better off going with dsl...my avg ping with cable in RTCW was in the 100s in most servers but i got dsl and now its in the 40s and 50s for pretty much any game i play over the net.

I thought cable was for a group of people living in an area that share the same cable, while DSL is just for a person.

Cable becomes shared closer to the house, basically a T-3 feeds a neighborhood, everyone on the node shares that through a router. DSL you have a straight shot to the local phone CO...then backbone out from there.

Performance differences really vary..depends on what ISP's are available in your area. Where I am, cable blows away the local phone company DSL most of the time (gaming wise and downloading wise), but I have PPPoA DSL through a really good ISP, and my ping blows the doors off of my buddies who have cable. Sure during cables "off hours" they can outdownload me, cable peak hours it's close, but my ping will always be lower 24/7. Another thing I like with DSL...nice and consistant.

yup, just depends on where ya live. where i'm at, cable is bogged down all the time cuz 2 ISPs competeting and both have a lot of customers. DSL here is for people who do their homework before they go with cable lol. everyone i've talked to said they used to have road runner or cox cable and got tired of it so they switched to sbc dsl. if you're out in a semi-rural area though, or apartment complex, you probably can't get dsl so go with cable cuz ANYTHING (even if it is ISDN) beats dial-up access jeesh (well...aol dsl not much better).

With most cable companies capping their service, DSL is just as fast and more consistent. In the 7 months I have had DSL, it has been slow for two occasions (due to a fiber optic cable being cut).

A friend of mine had cable and now has DSL. I asked him how he liked it compared to cable, I couldn't believe his answer was DSL since most people generally say cable is better after having both. He said his pings are far more consistent and it's generally the same speed as his cable was.

Just do the install yourself, it's easy as hell and saves you $200.

anyways.....get cable or dsl, doesn't matter, beats 56 ghey

I have heard bad thing about cable and DSL, I would go with the one that cost less. If your not happy with it try the other one.

I have cable and i am VERY pleased with pings and speed, on average to servers that are in NY (i'm in NJ) i get 15-25ms.

I have just subscribed to NTL 512 service and set the cable modem up on the USB port. I am not really that happy with the download speeds and I dont think that the browsing is as quick as cable is meant to be.

I am currently downloading a single file at about 7-8Kbps. I can get 4 with my modem!!!

What is wrong with my set up? Is it the USB setup? I can change to ethernet cos the modem supports both. I went with USB cos I thought that it would be easier.

Any comments/ideas plz??

Ahh, the endless debate between dsl/cable. I suggest you try them both cable then dsl(as suggested by another user). I've had nothing but good luck with my cable from Adelphia, I usually always have speeds around 2.8-3.3mb/sec I recently did a speed test and got 412KB/sec :) upload is around 128kb/sec as said though. And yes my norm download speeds are around 370-400KB/sec. :)

usb modem suck!!



buy a NIC and slap it to the modem with some cat5 buy a linksys networkcard or 3com l

linksys are cheap 20 bucks:D
