I just upgraded from a Win98SE to XP. So far I like it, it's been fun learning to tweak this new system. However it seems much, much slower than my Win98 system that I had tuned in pretty good over the last few years. What are some good performance speed tweaks for XP? Is it a much slower OS than Windows 98se? I know there is much more to XP, but I would like to know if people felt the same when changing over.

Any good sites on tweaking XP?

What's your system stats? XP loves memory and runs very nocely at 512. When I upgraded from the dreaded Windows ME, I had 256 and kicked it up to 512. Big difference in speed.

So very true about xp's memory appetite. I wen't from 98se to xp and with my previously more than adequate 128mb of ram xp ran like a (Insert your own tasteless metaphore here). When I went to 384mb of ram it was a whole new world.

On this machine.....Pentium 3 866, 256 SDRAM

I guess all these bells and whistles eat up memory? I want to disable as many of these "automatic" running services as possible. So far auto update, file protection, and sys restore are off. And when I type run---> services.msc I get a whole bunch of other running crap I have to learn about.

Hey, it looks cool though (XP)

Yah Viperone, I think that once you get used to xp you will really like it. I stuck with win98 for 4 years and I'm glad that Microsoft finally put out an OS thats got everything.

Too bad my board has only 2 slots. Makes upgrading a little costly. Anyone wanna trade 2 128meg mod's for one 256?:)

Definitely get that sucker up to 512. XP can really strectch its legs there and that will get your system up to speed, so to speak. Also, don't get too wild shutting down all those services. You can really mess things up doing that. One absolute necessary tweak utility you need to run is XP-AntiSpy. It's shuts down the services that talks to MS and also fixes some other goofy stuff automatically. Find that at: http://www.xp-antispy.de/

Another great utility that I have had since I got XP is TweakXP. And you can get that at (not free): http://www.totalidea.de/framesetproducts.htm

Norm posted some awesome sites for you too. The main thing to remember is not get too over-anxious and end up over-tweaking XP so far that you have to reinstall.

The only services I shut down were the one's on blackvipers site under the "safe" column. I didn't go too overboard. I do notice a little difference in performance though. Also I tried xpantispy3 and thats seems good too.

I also have another machine, AMD K6 333mghz...... I wonder how it would run XP? It also has 256SDRAM

turn off shadows under menus, switch the text antialiasing to clear type..that'll help a bit..the menu shadow really needs a gfx card to hardware accelerate...or it's slow.

When using XP Antispy, did anyone notice windows slowing down when shuting down?

nope

Well...maybe for the first time. But AntiSpy is not a running service. Once run, its work is done and it not need ever be run again.

You left the box set to dump your pagefile on shutdown, it is checked in XP Antispy by default, no need to really do that.:)

I went up to 512 too (mainly because Crucial had a sale and free shipping ;) , but I don't think I'd try to run XP on less than 512. Actually I'm at 768 right now... my server crapped out and I borrowed it's 256 stick till the CPU gets back from RMA-land :)

ah Bah. anything over 256Mb is a waste of a peasant's Rubles.

for the typical filthy peasant who surfs the web, plays games etc. 256MB is plenty. If you run Security-flaw-extraordinare IIS then , yes, you need more RAM.

XP is slow. nothing in this world can change that. All the BS tweaks being pumped out right now are worthless. sort of like that bogus QOS packet scam tweak that fooled everyone into thinking their bandwidth was being stolen. heheh
