When I attempt to install software or hardware it begins copying files from cdrom or floppy then errors and says "please insert windows 98SE cdrom-hit enter" -or- "disk contains no information ........" when in fact I know that it does. Any ideas?

Some installs (hardware and software) require certain system files that may not have been needed during the initial install of Win98 and therefore the message (not error) comes up to insert the win98 CD.

For instance, making changes to the network setup will do this.

If you don't have the CD, you could try pointing to c:\windows\options\cabs instead, as some OEM's place the required files there when they install Win98 at the shop.

With Windows 95 OSR2, I would type in or browse to C:\Windows\Options\Cabs when the prompt appeared. With Windows 98SE, I would type in or browse to C:\Win98 when the prompt appears.

It all depends of what folder the Windows files are at, if they have been installed in your computer during the manufacturing process.

Should find what it's looking for on the cd-rom when inserted, but to get rid of this annoying thing, copy the Win98 directory from your cd-rom to your C drive...then whenever it asks again, just type in C:\Win98 and you're all set.

Often the cabs files it's looking for are already on your hard drive. If you have an OEM computer, the contents of the Win98 directory are already on your hard drive in C:\Windows\Options\Cabs

...Also the individual files it may want when changing components around may already be installed, point to C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System
