Actually, I believe I have heard of places that can recover data after it has been formatted. Unless I heard something else. But I do remember it was really expensive to have done. I swear I remember Leo Laporte mentioning it at one time or another, not sure where has was talking about though.

There are many "hard drive disaster recovery" places out there that will recover data for you if it's ///that important///....but they are expensive. Since you only formatted a drive once, it will be a cakewalk for them, should be under a thousand bucks. But hard drives that have failed, or been through a fire, or been formatted with other stuff installed over on top...bill can get into the thousands.

I've used Phoenix recovery before for a client who had a fire in his office when the computer kinda had a melt down. Heh. Luckily his insurance covered the bill which was past 3 grand.
Many "undelete" utililities out there also which you can run yourself. I don't have a name handy, or the time to look now, but I have used them before, some just recover from deleted files, or recylce bin files, but other more robust ones do recover from formatted partitions.

Never tried it, but it looks promising.

Norton system works 2000 has an unformat program as part of the emergency disk set; not sure if the newer ones do. -m
