Hey folks!

Finally got the DSL line up and running (I'm happy), (but) the results are less than expected = 163 inbound/109 outbound. Before I start going "download crazy" with all the great tweaks on this site, can anyone take a look at my default settings. Any advice would be appreciated. By the way, I'm not very technical-NEWBIE!!! Thanks!!!

Regards,
Mike A.

TCP options string = 020405ac01010402

MTU = 1492
MTU is optimized for PPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for optimal throughput.

MSS = 1452
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1452, which equals MSS.
MSS is optimized for PPPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for maximum throughput.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 17424
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 17424
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
511104 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
255552 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
127776 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
63888 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 696.96 kbps (87.12 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 278.784 kbps (34.848 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
Consider increasing your RWIN value to optimize TCP/IP for broadband.

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 56 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 0000000

Windows 2000 Professional

PacBell DSL (up to 1.5MB download/inbound speed)

EnterNet 300 Software

2002-05-30 01:42:44 EST: 163 / 109
Your download speed : 163066 bps, or 163 kbps.
A 19.9 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 109574 bps, or 109 kbps.

What are your actual caps from your ISP? Download the TCPOptimzer and do the following:

Settings tab:

select - dsl pppoe
check custom settings
network adapter selection - your NIC
check modify all adapters
maxmtu - 1492
TTL - 64
TCP Receive Window - try 31944/50820 or 63888
MTU Discovery - yes
Black Hole Detect - no
Selective Acks - yes
Max Dup ACKs - 2
TCP 1323 Options - uncheck both boxes

Other Settings tab:

Max Connections per Server - 20
Max Connections per 1.0 Server - 40
Lan Browsing Speedup - optimized

Then select "Apply Changes" and reboot to take effect.

:D ;)

Actual caps are set at 1.5 mb/128 kb. Unfortunately I'm not at home, but I wil try the new settings as soon as I get home. I also just got off the phone with pac bell tech support, and they suggested to remove any electrical item around the modem and/or if the phone jack is parallel to a power outlet and within 3 inches, he suggested to move to a different jack. I'll try the above options and I will report back on the results.

Thanks
Mike A.

Try "mnosteele52" recommendations. Additionally for best tweaking advice you can post in the Tweaking forum, that is all they talk about there.
