Hi,

My neighbor just came into my office and threw an SMC USB device on my table and announced, "It's yours. I can't get it to work!!"

I have a computer that will be the guinea pig and cable connection. How do I configure this thing and what do I do to get it to work??

Thank you for helping me with this.

Depending on the OS... it should see the new device at boot-up and be ready to use it. Update the drivers (since you don’t have any) and you can rock-and-roll.

Nice to see you again. You don’t post much sir…

Hi MadDoctor,

On the computer that I will use the OS is Win98, and an Intel PCI to USB Universal Host Controller and a USB Root Hub are installed.

So I just plug the USB adapter into the computer and the other end RJ45 into the cable modem and reboot?? That's it!!?? No IP's,
DNS, Gateways??

OK. Sure sounds easy......those are usually the things that take a week for me.

Thank you.

Ohhhhhhh sorry about that. I thought you had a NIC or USB already (because you're online right now) and someone gave you a extra. Yes you'll need to do the "IP's, DNS, etc.

Sorry about that. I came out of the gate on the wrong foot. BTW... what "are" you using right now... before you got the free USB?

Hi MadDoctor,

I have had cable connection for about 3 years and I have 4 computers networked. All with NIC cards. I've just never done anything with USB and wanted to learn how. Thought this would be a good way to start.

Thank you.
