View Full Version : net slow with cable modem & XP
Got a problem with broadband, blueyonder. i am running XP pro and the net is comming in on a network card (netgear 311) all configured ok the modem is motorola 4200. the net speed keeps slowing to a crawl. to redeam this I have to release the renew my ip address. this works for a while then the net slows. I am running a home network through another network card (3Com). i have had two tech blokes out and they dont know what the problem is. all they have said is that it is xp and i should go back to another operating system (why should I) any answers would be most grateful. once a new ipaddress is present the net is fine for a while then it slows to a crawl

It doesn’t sound like a problem at your end. If you can release/renew your IP, and your speeds get better, then what OS you’re running doesn’t fit as a problem. I remember when I first got cable, my speeds were exceptional. Over the next few days... they slowly cranked me down to my caps (but those first few days were fun). You might be getting bursts of speed with the new IP but it sounds like you’re on a congested leg (too many people on your loop or several users running servers).
Someone smart will be along and might have a better answer than me.

That's a great answer I think you're dead on.
I noticed that, in time, my local segment has been getting full and slow. The lag sometimes is quite noticeable.

Could be the ip that has been assigned to you. Unplug modems power, unscrew coaxial, uninstall and reinstall nic, hook modem back up and see if you get a new ip.
also check Add/Remove Programs for "savenow" and/or "new.net"

This sounds right on to me. You may want to contact your ISP with your modem MAC, Ethernet card MAC, etc and see if maybe someone has set the IP you are given as there own. They should be able to tell if 2 people are running the same IP.
