Hello everybody.
I'm new to cable Internet, but not new to the Internet.
I have had cable now for about three weeks, it is great!
Now, I have a few questions.
A few comments first :)
I surfed and searched for a speed up fix thang for my cable and found sooo... many.
I tweaked the registry( just knew I would crash, but havn't so far)
I'm not that good in the registry by no means.
I downloaded TweakMaster and clicked some options, tried option 1, then option 2. That's where I'm at now.
Downloading files is doing real good, better than I was before the tweak.
Then I ran across this site, Speedguide.
Joined this forum.
I will try and copy and paste speedguide's test.

TCP options string = 020405b401010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 65535
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 65535
Note: Under Windows 9x, if you have RWIN set to any other value, and the Analyzer reports 65535 you might need to install the MS Vtcp386 fix.
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)

Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2621.4 kbps (327.675 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1048.56 kbps (131.07 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 120 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

Hey it worked! :)
Now could the speedguide guru read this and advise me some more.
Also, in your program once you make a change can you change back if the results are slower performance?
I read a few other post here and someone stated to uninstall any other speed tweaking program before install speedguide's.
Why do you have to do this?
Again, I have only used TweakMaster to get the registry where it stands now.
I have backed up my registry. Not real sure if I know how to use the backup if I neede to anyway :)
How do you back up only the "Keys" that this type of tweaking will make?
Thank you.
Billy.

first off Welcome to the forum and speedguide.net.

next you may want to try some different RWIN values, you can do this in regedit by using the info on the site to help you find it in the reg, here is the page

http://www.speedguide.net/Cable_modems/cable_registry.shtml

or you can use the TCP Optimizer a link to that is in my Signature

Hey, I've been on this computer all day! :)
I have put just about every number in this tweak thing i can do.
Here is my last tweak
TCP options string = 020405b40103030201010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 256960
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240

Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 10278.4 kbps (1284.8 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 4111.36 kbps (513.92 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 56 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

Now... I always test these changes by surfing and downloading.
I actually downloaded faster and more consistant this morning.
So time of day has a lot to do with this tweaking.
However, it is by far better than when I was unaware of this registry tweaking.
Can someone tell me how to back up only the Key in the registry that this stuff goes in.
If I ever have to restore, which do ya'll use ? a floppy or cd disk?
My registry backup is way bigger than a floppy.
See Ya'll.
Billy.

Just navigate to the key you want to back up in the registry and highlight it,, then click on file and export.

Give it a specific name,, like b4tweak and save it.

It will only back up the highlighted key. To restore it,, just import it.

Thank you
If I keep messing with the registry and screw something up, will my computer boot?
What format do you use for backup outside the hard drive?

BACKUPS!!??? We don't need no stinkin backups!!!:D :D :D

Sorry,, couldn't help it!! heh heh

Seriously,, if all you are doing is changing registry settings, the best backup I can suggest for you (using win98se) is a complete backup of your registry.

If you do something that screws up windows,, boot to safemode,, run regedit and import your backup,, then reboot.

As far as other backup formats,, cd is good. There are a number of programs that do a good job of it. I think win98 has a backup program also.

see ya

Bejane:

Your RWIN looks good.

Go to http://atl.speakeasy.net/ and run a speed test. Come back and post what your upstream/downstream rates are.

Hey CaptainSpeleo
I'll test my speeds again tomorow
They look terrible right now <*grin*>
1455/46
it said uploads were very slow! Ha.

CaptainSpeleo

Your downstream speed is not bad at all, but your upstream speed definitely is. Let's hope that some tweaks and guidance from this forum will improve those speeds. :)

Ran two test this morning
1578/179
1455/182
I actually did one un tweak <*grin*>
But, some tweaks state, "if it don't work change it back"

CaptainSpeleo

That's better, although the upstream rate still seems a bit low. Your ISP may have a low cap on upstream speed.

I just run a speed test on my Windows 98SE machine. These are my results:

First test:

308 Upstream
1713 Downstream

Second Test:

312 Upstream
2089 downstream

They probably do !
This may not be relative, but... I was having bad cable tv reception and I called service ( first time ever!) and the "cableman" said they were aware of the problem. It was their "Head End, they were working on it"
? Go figure :)
Anyway... after the RWIN tweaks and a few others this connection is much much better than when I first had it installed.

Who is your cable provider? I am with Comcast and my caps are 1500 down and 128 up.:( :( :(

Cable provider, Knology

Your ISP's Web Page Click Here (http://www.knology.com)

I checked your ISP's Page... here is what they say. If you want to go to their webpage click on link above.

Q. What is the speed of the modem? Your Modem is capable of 1000kbs download and 256kbs upload

Hey...
CaptainSpeleo , you have some real good numbers on your down and ups.

Travlin_Man, thanks for the info, I had that around here somewhere.

mnosteele52, I thought you might like to know I changed my dnsPriority, HostsPriority, ect. numbers in the registry back to default.
This may help you and the other tweaking guru's

Ah... I just read in the tips you already knew this <*grin*>
"write down the current values PRIOR to changing..... so you can change thenm back"
Just trying to help.

I'm happy with those speeds. There's nothing like watching a 10 MB file finish downloading in 1 - 2 minutes.:D

Looks like you have some work to do ray, first we need to know wat your ISP's caps are? And your MTU needs to be 1492 so try the following:

Start - run and type in regedit and go here in your registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Net\000n

(Where "n" is a number like 0001, 0002, etc.) Look for the 000? folder, with the "iVasion PoET Adapter" in it. (To the left of which it will say, "DriverDesc".)

Look for the entry TunnelMode = 1
Double click on TunnelMode, and change the 1 to a 0.

Then download the TCPOptimizer and try the following settings:

Settings tab:

select - DSL PPPoE
check - custom settings
network adapter selection - your NIC
check modify all adapters
maxmtu - 1492
TTL - 64
TCP Receive Window - 18876/27588
MTU Discovery - yes
Black Hole Detect - no
Selective Acks - yes
Max Dup ACKs - 2
TCP 1323 Options - uncheck both boxes

Other Settings tab:

Max Connections per Server - 20
Max Connections per 1.0 Server - 40
Lan Browsing Speedup - optimized

Then select "Apply Changes" and reboot to take effect.

After doing so please post back with another analyzer test result and answer to your ISPs caps.

:) :D

I've got 0000, 0001, and 0002, and "iVasion PoET Adapter" is not in any of them.

DriverDesc 0000 is dial up adapter
DriverDesc 0001 is 100/10M Ethernet pci adapter
DriverDesc 0002 is efficiant Networks P.P.P.o.E Adapter (NTSP3)

Am i a cabbage or is there help for me

Look under all of them (most likely Networks P.P.P.o.E Adapter) and see if you see the value.:)

I'm afraid theres no mention of "Tunnel mode"
within the registry, and I'm not feeling too clever!

Any other option, and cheers for the help
