...Using a cross-over cable for a 2 computer connect, for just file sharing, Does this require a internet connection? If so, then one computer will need 2 nic cards, 1 for broadband connection and 1 for the 2 computers to interface. Is this correct???

if you just want to share files
1 NIC in each computer is enough

but if you want to share your DSL/Cable Connection and files one comp will need 2 NICs

....because i have a cable modem i opted for the 2nd nic card on my guest computer ( xp ). One for modem and one to interface with the hoast computer ( 98se.) Have connected computers via cross-over cables (cat5e) in thier perspective nic cards, which appear to be working. Also ran the xp's networking wizard on both computers ( B.T.W. -- The wizard isn't really a wizard or else i wouldn't be here! ). In any event i'am unable to view the host computer from the guest........ Whould appreciate any links or detailed instructions on how to get this thing running... THANKS

For just going from one machine to another for file transfers with a cross-over cable you just need the one NIC in each machine. Nothing to do at all with ICS. Just in your network properties make sure the same protocols are installed on both machines (NETBEUI would be the important one for you I believe). Give both machines the same workgroup name and you should be all set. Enable sharing on both machines also. All done through the networking. No other software needed.

If this is just temporary to copy some files then get the cable modem out of the equation. If this is something you want to do permantely I would suggest buying a router or a switch (if you buy or get multiple IP's).

Thanks for the info Noevo, Since i'am just going from 98se to XP. On my next try, on seting this up i believe i can disable the nic card that interfaces with the modem in network places ? Accoding to this link http://www.wown.info/j_helmig/Contact.htm netbeiu is not supported by " xphome". In any event that site was a pretty good read, and i'll report back if i get this patch running. thanks again

FYI- netbeui is supported with XP Home, it's just not installed by default but it is on the XP CD and can be installed. do a search for it and you should be able to find out how to do it, it's pretty easy.

----Noevo, hope you can clear up something for me?, But 1st go to this link http://www.wown.info/j_helmig/guidcnf2.htm and scroll down to the WINDOWS XP (local area connection properties graphic). These are are the same protocals that are listed on my xp machine, However when i try yo install (1) of them. I get the message that windows cannot locate any drivers and to install the disk with the drivers on them. My 1st question is, Do i need to intall these drivers? If i do, How is this done. My computer only came with a restore cd only! Sorry to bore you with this nubian stuff and appreciate any input...

If those are listed then they are already installed. Netbeui needs an extra step before you can (and should) add it. Here's a link that explains how to install it, your restore cd should have the XP files on it where this document describes them.

I run XP Home Edition at home and use netbeui for my LAN. It's pretty easy and straight forward to add.

ask away, it's a good way to learn :)

Great! Glad to hear you got it going :)

PS- the one way thing was probably due to permission/user settings in XP. A little playing with that and you could have it both ways i'm sure.

I have an XP Home, Win2k, and shhh! a Win ME machine all networked and user settings can be tricky when setting up that kind of lan.
