Ok i just got Sympatico ADSL again, after ditching it a year and a half ago. Problem is that i got the same BS NORTEL DSL modem. I hate it cuz it only supports 2 IPs, while the Alcatels and Efficent speedstreams that Bell also gives out support at least 5! I called Bell tech support and they said that my area is still using the Nortel platform and isn't compatible with Alcatel's.

Is this true?? I'm sure theres some kinda ADSL standard manufactures have to stick to, like the DOCSIS standard for cable modems. Are Nortel modems using a proprietary platform or is Bell just BSing??

PLZ HELP

You can't use a Alcatel CPE with a Lucent (Stinger) DSLAM.

You can't use a CopperMountain DSLAM while handing out Zyxel CPEs.

For DSL, for Lucents you hand out CPEs that are approved by Lucent to be known to work with their type of line encoding.

So which does the Nortel use

Nortel uses an older model Nortel 1 Meg modem that is no longer in production. (thus the update to Alcatel)

I was thinking the wrong thing before... They use the same type of line encoding, but differnet backend equipment and modulation schemes. :)

thats too bad, I can tell you that the Alcatel's work great, I guess you have to keep hoping that tell fined the money to do the upgrade in your area.

So an Alcatel/efficent speedstream DSL modem won't work in an area where the backend equip is nortel?

Man, i know that Bell won't switch it, cuz they've got no need to, and if they do switch to the Alcatel platform, they're gonna have all these obsolete Nortel modems lying around.... I HATE MY AREA

they may do the up-grade when they start doing the speed packs in your area.

what you mean speed packs?

BigAmp

they are going to have a pack that is below 1M, at 1M and one with speed above 1M.

HMMMMMMMMMMMM very true!!! The top end package is 3MBit/sec down and 640kbits/sec up, but the nortel modem can only do 1.3MBit down!! Oh but wait, what if NOBODY in my area orders the "ultra" package?? LOL i'll be stuck with this Nortel BS forever....... well I guess I could order the "ultra" package for a month, then ditch it just to get them to upgrade my area, HAHAHA
