View Full Version : Great Downstream Speed; Horrible Upload!

My DSL ISP is EarthLink/Mindspring. For the past 3 months, I've been downloading at around 1200-1300mbps and uploading at around 300. Suddenly my upload speed has dropped to BELOW 1mbps (Yes 1 -- and download speed has remained at 1300). EarthLink/Mindspring Tech Support claims there's nothing wrong with my DSL. Any ideas what might be causing the upload speed to crash?

I think you meant to say 1200 - 1300 kbps and not mbps. That would be f-a-s-t!:)

TCP options string = 020405ac01010402
MTU = 1492
MTU is optimized for PPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for optimal throughput.
MSS = 1452
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1452, which equals MSS.
MSS is optimized for PPPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for maximum throughput.
Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 37752
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 37752
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
511104 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
255552 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
127776 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
63888 (MSS x 44)
bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1510.08 kbps (188.76 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 604.032 kbps (75.504 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 117 hops
TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

Try the following RWIN values. 63888 and 127776 (make sure Tcp1323Opts is set to 1 for the second value)
I know the values are kind of high.. but I'm just seeing if you've reached your maximum download/upload.
Have you tried RASPPPoE yet? If not, read about it and download it from here (http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~normanb/).
Before you install RASPPPoE, make sure you uninstall WinPoet by running NukePoet.. You should find it in your ISP's website.
Make sure you have downloaded the Microsoft Vtcp.386 Update for Windows 98 if you want your RWIN value above 65535.
Also, make sure your LAN settings are clear. Open up Interne t Explorer, click Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings > Nothing checked at all.
Have you set your NIC an IP address and subnet mask? If not, and you notice that your computer hangs when starting up and while browsing, do the following:
1. Click Start>Settings>Control Panel
2. Double click Network
3. Look for your network card. (Make sure it's a TCP/IP protocol) Example: TCP/IP Lynksis LNE100TX Fast Ethernet Adapter
4. Click it and choose properties.
5. Select IP Address from the tab.
6. If Obtain IP Address Automatically is checked, uncheck it and choose Define IP Address.
7. Enter 192.168.0.1 into IP Address.
8. Enter 255.255.255.0 into Subnet Mask.
9. Click Ok on each Window and when it asks to reboot, do it.
Note: If you cannot connect after doing this, undo the IP Address and reboot.
Good luck.

I can't seem to find the VTCP.386 Update for Windows 98 you suggested I install. (Microsoft's Search Engine doesn't find it.) Can you point me in the right direction? Also, is there a way to tell if it's already installed on my system? (I did a file search and found the file, but it's dated 3/99 so I assume it's not been updated.)
Again, thanks for your help.
you can find the update here

just read to find the right one.
