Router Ports

How can i enable MSN Messenger and MIRC (to name a few) to send files thru my SMC7004ABR router? Whenever i try to have a voice conv, or transfer a file, it tries to connect for about a minute, then fails. I don't understand the "Setup" in the http configuration. It keeps mentioning udp or tcp ports, client filtering, etc, and i'm clueless (for someone who knows a fair bit). Help anyone?

The barricade Firewall is keeping the ports close. In order to connect you have to log to the Router’s menu, and open certain ports, or your can put the computer on the DMZ.

DMZ opens all ports, but it neutralizes the Firewall, so be careful.
