View Full Version : Some sites accessible, some not?

I've installed some of the standard automated speed tweaks available for Windows XP, and all seemed well. But now, it seems that several sites that my other friends online have verified, return a DNS error to me. I uninstalled all the tweaks and rebooted, but to no avail.

I don't know a whole lot of networking (and I don't think it was the tweaks that's causing the problem...), but...if my ISP's DNS server is having problems...wouldn't ALL my websurfing come to a halt? I'm HOPEFULLY assuming that this is just a coincidence, and that I haven't FUBAR'D something.

I had a friend resolve the true IP address of download.com and pricewatch.com (Two of the several sites I couldn't access) did a successful trace, AND was able to open pricewatch (half of it...), but not download.com. Very ambiguous symptoms. (Remember...both these sites are verified to be up.)

PLEASE HELP!

Go to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc and open up the hosts file with notepad.

Check to see if the sites you are not being able to access are there.. If so, delete them (including the IP) and save the hosts file. Restart IE and you should be able to browse those sites again.

Hey Ghaleon4,

You fail to mention whether you could access these sites before you added the tweaks.

Have you installed anything else like firewalls or any other type of software?

Also, have you checked internet explorers security and privacy settings? in IE go to tools, then internet options.

Let us know

Well, the problem seems to have dissappeared overnight...

Now, I'm just REALLY curious as to what caused the problem.

I've always been behind a firewall. As far as networking is concerned, I feel well knowledged in the operation of the physical layer of things. But browsers, and protocols on the other hand, are things that I really do not know much about the operation of...

Any hypothesis?

If the problem disappeared overnight then it was probably your ISP having some technical difficulties.

Yeah,,, Evil is probably right. Either your ISP or any one of a zillion hitches in your get along. heh heh:D :D

A friend of mine called me with a similar problem. His turned out to be a combination of things. He had downloaded "Bearshare" to find some songs he was looking for. Of course, when you download and install that program, it installs a few other programs (very sneakily). Those programs all installed into his startup. They,, along with his Zone Alarm firewall,, which wasn't set up for the new programs,, created the same problems you expierienced.

Since your problem cleareditself up,,, I would tend to agree with evil,,, the problem was your ISP.

Be careful what you download. Watch what you install. Know what is running on your system.

When you illiminate all the possibilities,, whatever is left,, however improbable is your answer"
