View Full Version : DefaultTTL
could chaning your TTL setting in the registry have any effect on lost or choked packets in online gaming?
I don't think so, but if you put it too low it can slow down your connection.

So what do you think it should be? And please don't tell me to download the optimizer and run it, cause I've done that, but it is not the all powerful force in tweaking.
no its just a quick ball park number that can keep most people happy with the speed improvment that it makes. if you realy want to do some damage then you need to spend countless hours tweaking this and that just to get that last 0.5%, but hey I don't have a job yet this summer so it helps pass the time when I can't sleep.

TTL or Time to Live is the number of hops a packet can travel before being dropped. Windows Default is 128.
Most packets in the USA take an average of 15-25 hops to reach it's destination depending on location and server traffic. A little longer to overseas servers. Most users get good results setting TTL to 64. If you're just connecting to US sites then you could try setting it to 32.

Does the TTL have to be a multiple of 8 (32, 64, 128) Or can it be any number?

It can be any number if I remember correctly.
BTW for Win 95, 98, 98SE and ME the default is 32.

Set the DefaultTTL to 64. From most everything I've read, that seems to be the recommended setting.
