Hi there folks.

I am wondering what the best way would be to hook-up a system with Windows ME and one with Windows 98SE. This will NOT have to be able to access the internet and will be using network cards.

We want to play Age of Empires II against each other and that is it.

Thank you! :)

Just run a crossover cable between the two NICs.

Can I get one of these anywhere? Or should I go to a computer store and buy one up?

Also, do I need to do anything special with Windows or should they run pretty smoothly together?

Thanks, mon. :)

You can get them from basically any decent computer store.
It worked well for me when I used it.

Some general questions:

Should I plug the x-over cable in when the computers are on or off?
Do I have to do any type of set-up through Windows for this to work?
Do I have to set the IPs as anything different?
Do I have to change the settings for the NIC?

Thanks guys! :)

well a crossover will work but unless your used to doing alot of tweaking I would suggest that you buy a 4port switch and 2 nic cards W/cables this might run you $60.00 then down the road you will be able to expand your network etc.. also for someone
thats new to networking it will be easier on you heres what you do if you get the hardware I`m talking about install the nics plug your switch in and connect your data cables once you`ve done this you need to make sure both pc are in the same WORKGROUP the default is WorkGroup so just make sure there both the same you can check this by right clicking on network nieghborhood icon and the clicking on the identification tab, there you should see the name of your workgroup make sure these are the same on both pc`s next you need to click on the configuration tab and make sure you have the following protocols
NETBEUI
IPX/SPX
TCP/IP
good luck

IPX/SPX sucks

You don't have to, but it is recommended

Just the NIC settings

Yes, 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2 should be fine

Do I have to change the settings for the NIC?
Just set those IP's

We have things set-up, but they are not communicating.

How do we change the IP addy??

Thanks :)

PS The workgroup names are the same.

Right click on Network Neighborhood
Scroll down to TCP/IP
Double click on it
Fill in the desired IP
change subnet to 255.255.255.0
