Is it possible? at all? I believe I have read somewhere that networking those two were impossible...
Well, this is my situation:
I just bought a router (as in, an hour ago I just left the store) got a Linksys 4port router. I hooked the things that needed to get hooked up in order for it to be up and running but I ran into a problem. I made a network setup disk from my XP computer and found that it was not meant to be for a 2k computer...how else can i network?

Possible and fairly easy.
-Choose you network protocol (you need TCP for internet, but others work for file and print sharing)
-Add file and print sharing
-Bind F/P sharing to your chosen protocol
-Share out the folders and printers that you want to share
-Set the permissions on those shares so that only users you trust can access (remove the user "everyone" from the permission string and add a valid user account)
If you want to be able to browse shares via network neighborhood, then you will want to have a common account (ie user "Skye" exists on both machines).
You have probably heard that Netbeui is not a part of the default XP install. This is correct. It is a popular protocol for small LANs connected to the internet as it is not routable across the internet. Translation, no one outside your LAN can access your shares. If you bind sharing to tcp, then someone could potentially access the same shares as that protocol is routable.

Not sure why you would need a network setup disk at all.

You don't need the setup disk. It is convenient to a sysadmin who needs to mirror network configs to many clients. You only need to configure once...I think it only works on other XP boxes though.

the router will set up everything for you. just plug away and go :D
you need to share files if you want to do that though..
