in my home we have a 64/256 adsl connection managed by a zyxel 642 prestige modem/router ... a hub with than my win98 pc, my linux pc and my friends winxp machine...
now this guy is always online gaming, what steals a lot of bandwidth... how can i limit his connection to 4KB/s?
is there a way to slow down his ethernet-card? .. or any software i can install in his machine to slow him dowm? .. or does the modem/router have a limitation-function or something like that?
please help me...
(i can't tell the dude shouldn't play anymore, cause he is paying the half of the adsl .. but i can do with the hardware anything, because it is up to 95% mine)

You could lower his RWIN setting.
But gaming shouldn't steal all that much bandwidth

Depends on the game. Some will bring a solid connection to a crawl.
I don;t know that lowering RWIN will help - you would have more administrative messaging (acks and such). You would need to modify the registry of his machine. There are little apps that will do it for you (cablenut.exe, drtcp), but I would be careful as I would have to beat my roommate senseless if he were to muck with my registry with no permission...
I would talk to him about it and tell him that he needs to pay for an increased line speed or agree to gaming at agreed upon hours. You have a very low upload so you are going to have problems when you have multiple machines sending/receiving at the same time.

I agree with Cybersyke, I would beat you to a pulp if I caught you screwing around with my machine.. or worse, I would get my own stuff, let you have your own stuff and pay for all of it, or just flat move out.
Maybe he doesn't like you having two boxes hooked-up, from which you could also use up a lot of bandwidth if you so chose.
Best bet would to be to talk to him about it, would save a lot of hard feelings later. 4KB/s.. I would be pissed! And as far as doing whatever you want with the hardware, no.. it's still hooked to half of HIS ADSL, is it not?

ok.. it doesn't sound very fair of me cutting "his" bandwidth.. but 1. he is always online-gaming or leeching from kazaa or winmx ..
2. i tried to talk to him .. no chance .. his meaning is.. i pay - i use ..
3. he is my roommate .. and i'm tired to play the admin and supporter for him and owning by my own about 2.3KB/s of bandwidth ..

Tough spot if he isn't willing to comprimise. I would personally explore getting my own connection (or separating him from yours). If he is either gaming or filesharing all the time, he would probably suck up any line speed increases. Not very economical, but the only way to ensure that you get what YOU have paid for. Perhaps telling him of your plans to do so might make him more apt to negotiate.
To be honest, a connection at the speeds you have listed is probably designed for a single machine. You upload is probably only double what you would have from dial-up anyway...
Good luck,
Skye
Absolutely, if he won't compromise, then you may have to do something drastic, just not messing with his computer. He pays, he uses, sounds fair, but not if you cant use it yourself. If you increase the speed of the system, sounds like he will just suck up more and more. Wonder how it would go if you started running Kazaa or gaming, at the same time he was..

first we are not enemies.. but i'm tired of trying to work (e.g. homeworks like making homepages) and not beiing able to upload or download components of it ..
i don't even try to run those P2P-stuff because he is always leeching and i wouldn't even be able to start a search ..

I wouldn't try to install software on his machine unless he knows about it. I wouldn't be able to forgive some one doing that to me.
This whole topic strikes me as ironic - your flatmate is doing ot you what those who uncap their cable service do to their neighbors.
I feel for you man. The only way to throttle his use of your collective bandwidth is to install software on his box or some sort of QoS device as your router.
Good luck,
SKye

hmmmm I miss read, if I had known you were doing it without his knowledge I wouldn't have posted that link:(
Increase your own RWIN to a very large number.
It should help a little as long as long as your roomie doesn't adjust his to compensate.

i allready optimized my rwin for adsl .. and slowed down his rwin.. or optimized it to a 56k modem connection ... so his downloads seam to have only 8KB/s ..but if he has x downloads running .. his speed is x*8KB/s ... i'm thinking of turning his machine down to a 33.6K modem rwin
