I'm trying to transfer a 1.8 gig file... now I know it's huge and may take SOME time, but I also know it shouldn't take over 3 hours to get to 50%.

A 5 meg mp3 took about 8 seconds to copy.

Unless my math is off... a 100 MBit network should transfer 12.5 megs per second unless incredibly congested (which in this case, is not).

I have a Linksys BEFSR41 Cable/DSL Router w/ 10/100 4-port switch.

My desktop has Windows XP Pro and my laptop has the same. Both computers have 10/100 nics in them (and Local Area Connection Status shows both running at 100 Mbps).

I've ran the QoS tweak from this site, and still no luck.

Would anyone have ANY idea as to why it's running this slow?

what are the system specs of each machine?

Laptop
---------

Pentium III 750
192 megs RAM
10 gig HD
compaq 10/100 nic (built in)

Desktop
----------
Athlon 500
384 Megs RAM
100 gig HD
SMC 10/100 nic (not sure exact model)

Depends upon the protocol being used to transfer on the lan. netbeui is fastest/safest and tcp\ip is insecure.

compaq 10/100 nic (built in) is most likely the source of problem.

not to mention those arent the fastest machines around...

That's what I thought at first, but on my friend's LAN, I can transfer very fast (with my laptop)

Since the filesize is greater than your physical RAM, you are writing part of that file to swap - you are effectively writing it twice. Windows copies the whole file to the clipboard before it starts the transfer. For an mp3 file, that is not a problem as you can store it in RAM. I could be wrong but this is my understanding.

How fast are you HDD's? That could be your bottleneck vs the network.

You will never get 100Mb. If you are reaching 90% of your rated speed you are doing well.

Try manually configuring each NIC to use 100 mbit full duplex. Don't rely on autoconfiguration ot upon the lights/software to conclude that it is really set for 100 mbits.

Frankly, if you get 30 mbits you are doing well. Please see the review on this site.
