Im thinking on joining one, have a few questions


arn't these things same things as spyware, some programs have this hidden in them (kazaa)

also, where does the program say at? In your taskbar?

and, does it only uses my machine when its idle?

No these programs are not spyware.

Genome@Home does, but there are programs that can set it up to run as an invisible service such as firedaemon or to put it as a tray icon. As for the other two I'm not sure. Someone else can answer that.

Yes, Genome@Home uses Idle CPU cycles, it runs at Low Priority. That means if something with a higher priority (every thing other that Genome) comes along Genome get's pushed aside and the CPU works on whatever it is.

not spyware at all, nothing hidden

these programs stay in your task bar, fully visible, fully minimizable, fully manageable

your machine only uses a certian ammount of the CPU at any given time. These programs use everything that isnt being used, and yield all CPU power to any program that needs it

for example, say your comptuer is idle, then say genome will use everything it can for genoming, most likely 99 or 100% of your CPU.

then say you jump on your comptuer and start doing some heavy photoshopping... and photoshop takes up 79% of your CPU, then genome@home will only take up 21% of your CPU.

it will never slow down your machine.. because it only uses CPU cycles that arent being used.

which one is the best? GENOME@HOME OF COURSE!

i run G@H 24/7 , even when i game. it only uses spare cpu cycles. it does not effect my games one bit.

Take DH's advice, both projects have their merrits, read about them and decide which one fits in best with your own ideology.
Both are good causes but both have different goals.
Now if all your concerned about is BIG numbers on the stats page then pick the one that does that for you, big scores to compensate for small .....'s :)
