Obviously a Major Malfunction

Well, the CPU fan failed on my Slot A Athlon 900 that's never good, but the CPU is fine and will run for about 2 minutes before the BSOD comes up due to the processor overheating. Slot A HSF's are a rare breed these days, but I've placed and order at newegg.com for a new hsf and some AS along with 2 sticks of 256MB Crucial PC2100 ECC for The Dually. I wasn't gonna pay $13 shipping on a $20 order:mad:! Hopefully the 900mhz machine will only be down for a couple of days I hope to have it up and running by Wednesday, Thrusday at the latest. In the mean time I might fire up ole trusty dusty. A 100mhz Pentium to take up the slack of the downed 900mhz. Oh, well Genome on!!!!

WoW Agentbeast, major bummer indeed ! I've had a couple of p100's takin up the slack but they both died a horrible death. On top of that i lost my main Duron 1Ghz and my backup as well Duron 933Mhz. Emobley3 and moa2t4t are both helpin me get my main back up.
I hope you get that rig runnin again :D

It's not fatal, it's just the fans don't spin and the HS is pretty crappy. I had the same problem with my 233mhz k6 back in the day. I was able to keep that thing going by having a house fan blowing on it till I got a new HSF. Tried that with the 900 mhz but it doesn't seem to work that well. Lasts about 5 minutes then it's the BSOD. Once I get the HSF and AS It'll be back up and running. Besides my main dually rig is gonna get a little kick in the A$$ with the 512mb more of memory out of the deal. It's all good. That 900mhz machine needed a vacation. I've never run that machine 24x7 like it has been for the past 3 weeks:) Those oldie machines aren't that bad. My 166mhz machine crunches about 2 genes per week. That's not bad for an 8 year old pc.

Hey u ever take the tag off the back of the fans and add a drop of motor oil? Under that sticker they're usually open or have a little cap. 10w30 works great. i tune up my fans, clean em and oil em up and darn it works ! quiets them down too !
After about 6 months of runnin i think the factory lube dries out in the fans so i kinda do a little tune up.:D
I'm glad it aint your main that went out. I've got this xp1700 chip i'm gonna toss on a board and use my duron 1ghz as a back up. Hopefull have both rigs up .I hate being outta action.
Right now i'm using a crappy laptop i got at the salvation army for 5 bucks. Dang fossil ibm in beige. I never saw a laptop in beige b4 and especially a relic such as this. :rotfl: Well i might not be crunchin but i'm online ;)

I reseated the HSF and setup a hurricane of a fan blowing inside the case. It runs cooler that it ever has now. I guess I'm gonna take one for the team here, and listen to this hurricane while I sleep atleast for a couple of nights.

Actually the fan doesn't bother me that much, I actually like a little noise so long as it's constant. Talking and stuff like that bothers me while I sleep. As for the CPU it won't fry There is 1 good fan on the heatsink + the hurricane + the motherboard is set to shutoff when the temp hits 70 degrees celcius. Everything's gonna be alright...
