Help, I just brought up a new laptop with W2K on my home LAN. From my other machines I see it when browsing in Windows Explorer, but if I click on it to browse to it I get the following error,
"You must supply a password to make this connection: \\TANYA\IPC$" (Tanya is the comuter name).
From the W2K machine I can browse and access my Win98 machines fine.

you're having problems accessing your win2k machine from your win98 machine?
what is the name of your windows 98 machine?
what is the name of your windows 2000 machine?
on your windows 98 machine.. do you use all one logon? if so, click start on your 98 machine and see where it say "log off ____ ..." ? what is the name after log off?

What you need to do is add a user account on the Win2K machine. It will have to be the same login and password that you use for the Win9x machine. You will then be able to access the resources you need.
Stugatz is correct, but you also need to do one more thing- you need to set up a share(s) on the Win2000 pc. The \IPC$ share is an administrative share of the root directory- it is used by the system and you cannot access it, not should you delete or rename it. If you want to share the whole C drive, then select C in explorer, right click > sharing, and select they "New Share" button at the bottom of the dialogue box. Call it what ever you'd like, and then set permissions accordingly.

OK to answer everyone's questions:
1. I already made a share of the "C" drive on the W2K machine, and set no security on it. But before I can even click on the machine name, to then see the share I get the error message.
2. The W2K machine's computer name is "Tanya", the W98 machine's name is "Server". Both are in the workgroup called "Connaughton", not using domains.
3. The W98 machine self starts with the user name "Server" and no password.
While I wait for any more info I will try making a user account on the W2K machine called "Server" with no password as well.

that is what you gotta do
try giving it just user rights...
if you can access everything, great
if you cant, try using power user access. if that still wont let you access everything, give it administrator access

This worked. I did it while waiting for a response so I started with Admin, I will back down the list of rights and test, as you suggest.
