I'm trying to get my lan rig up and running before the party is over and i can't figure out what is wrong.
Linksys LNE-100TX. The card works fine and has the correct drivers loaded. Device Manager reports it as working fine. Winipcfg reports an appropriate IP address and I put in the Gateway address (router behind cable modem).
However internet explorer doesn't load pages on the www and internet connection wizard reports errors before it starts.
What is wrong?

Make sure you have the correct DNS, WINS, etc. for their network. Or if they have it set up to optain it all automatically, make sure that's set up right.
Can't you look at someone else's config there and set it up just like theirs?

people are using auto ip config and the only thing that needs to be changed, they say, is to enter in the gateway address
i can ping computers on the network but i need to be able contact computer on the net for an interlan match that we are going to have

you said you're using a router? then you shouldnt have to set a gateway on your computer. the DHCP server should auto config that for your machine
dont assign it a gateway and see what happens

looks like you need a new DNS server
try 4.2.2.1
