Help. I just upgraded the laptop for my daughter in her room. Before I had a Dell CPM166ST and it worked fine on the LAN, the wiring had only the 4 usual wires for CAT 5 connected, 1,2,3,6.
Now with an IBM Thinkpad 600E and a 3COM 10/100 3CXFE575BT card I cannot get the same LAN wire to work. (It runs through the attic so I'd hate to have to swap it out).
If I take it to the router and connect a regular cable I can get it connected.
Anyone have any ideas.
change your wiring or use all 8 wires.
Cat5 10\100 uses all 8 wires.

I guess I really meant the 4 usual wires for Ethernet 1,2,3 & 6. However, I was able to get it to work. I had to load a different driver, (older) and then manually set the link setting to 10MB Full Duplex. Guess it just didn't like 100MB.

TonyT, cat5 only uses 1 2 3 and 6. even 100mbps only uses 1 2 3 and 6. i bought some cat5 at frys a while ago and it only physically has 4 wires... hooked up to 1 2 3 and 6. running that right now at 100mbps
check both ends of the cable....
it sounds like one of your ends is screwed...
(unless the cable itself is screwed...)

Usually I would agree except it has been working for a couple years with her older computer, but now with this newer one I have to force 10MBPS Full Duplex to get it to work, it will not work at 100MBPS Full.
