In the hopes of making my weekend project go smoothly, I'm asking for advice. I plan to link via a D-Link router (purchased) with my roommate's computer to share Sprint DSL PPPoE. My computer is an Athlon 1000(or 1.0?) running WinXP Home, his is an older Athlon 700, running WinXP Pro. Will it make any difference which computer is the server? I'd prefer to use mine, but I'm not sure how Windows will like it, or if there are any inherent advantages to Pro being the server. Any input would be appreciated.

A second (far less urgent) question is I found I needed to manually assign part of my IP for some sites, the number for which I had to call my provider to get. I believe it had something to do with the entire DSL network being treated as a single NAT because of PPPoE, if that makes sense. Now the router documentation says it will assign them for the network. Does this mean the sites that required this will no longer be accessible to me? One of them is actually affiliated with Microsoft, why they would put out something incompatible with PPPoE is beyond me...

You will not need to set up a server to share your internet connection,,, the router will do that for you. You should be able to set "Obtain an IP address automatically" and the router will supply your PC with its own internal IP address.

As for the second part of your question,,, finding sites would depend on your DNS server,, the router should handle that as well. If you were to change to specifying your own internal IP then you would have to put in the DNS server that would be obtained from your ISP and the gateway IP address, it would be your router internal IP address.

Doesn't make sense to me,,, hopefully someone else has your ISP and they can clarify.

Doesn't make sense to me either. He's not grasping NAT and PPPoE.

Lisje, as Blacksword mentioned, the router treats each workstation equally....there is no server.

The router also does the PPPoE authentication....PPPoE is really just a fancy dial up adapter the ISP uses for authentication to log on, where you enter a username and a password.

NAT (Network Address Translation) is a hardware method of sharing a single IP address to a network behind it. It's how the router works.

The router forwards DNS requests from the workstation to your ISP's DNS servers...you shouldn't have any trouble hitting any website.
