I have a computer that has windows 2000 Pro installed on it and it has extremely slow transfer speeds when surfing or downloading stuff from the Internet (about 2.3kb/sec) I have a Cable connection, so I know that it should not be this slow. I have another computer in the house that downloads about 100-200 kbs running from the same connection this one is loaded with windows ME. Here are the stats on the slow one
Windows 2000 Pro
10mbs networking card
256 pc 133 ram
40 gig Maxtor Hdd
I am baffled as to why the transfer rates are so slow, any insight on the matter would be appreciated....also, I checked and the networking card is compatible with windows 2000. There are also no conflicts that appear. Thanks

Could be your RWIN value. For some reason, some websites and other places recommend it should be ridiculously low, but it should be as recommened on the speeguide.net test. I'm not sure what else to say, i'm not an expert. :-p

that would make sense, but it does not happen on some websites, it happens on all.....Maybe I will just format it and use Windows ME to see if that makes a difference........

it's most likely your RWIN, you need to read up in tweaking forum to see how to increase/decrease RWIN depending on results. Also do an analyzer test on the front page of speedguide.net and also run a speedtest somewhere that you think is accurate.

I have Windows 2000 pro at work. My RWIN is limited to 8760,, and I can still download at 500kbps.
I am not recommending 8760, just clarifying the low RWIN statement.
Not sure what your problem could be,, possibly the tweaking forum could help out.
From what I have seen XP or 2000 will out perform WinME.
Questions you need to answer are.
1. How are you currently sharing your connection
2. Is the 2000 rig NEW to your network
3. If you connect 2000 rig standalone what are the rates
4. you state the network card is compatible with windows 2000 but have you installed the 2000 drivers for it?

I just purchased a new networking card to see if that would improve things. The old card was 10 MBS Base card, so I bought a 10/100 card. Problem was when I installed the new card I could not connect to anything on the network, or the Internet. I played with all of the settings on the network and had no luck. The card is a siemans (not sure on model and spelling of manufacturer, will check when I get home and update post). Anywho, I called the tech support and they said to check the driver and if it is working properly, then there is nothing else that they can do for me (as there equipment is working fine, so it says). The light on the NIC is blinking green, according to the instructions it means there is 100 mbs activity. I am no expert, but I do know how to install a PnP device in a computer.....any advice?
I also tried the card in a computer that has WinMe installed on it and it produced the same results. The card is compatible with windows 9x/ME/2000 pro. The driver is installed and so forth. Any suggestions?
(long winded I know)....
